FEC filings reveal beleaguered Liberty Safe’s parent company is a major donor to Democrats who push gun control

A recent report exposed that heavy-duty home and gun safe manufacturer Liberty Safe's parent company has donated almost half a million dollars to pro-gun control Democrat officials.

Charlie Kirk, the founder and CEO of the conservative educational non-profit organization Turning Point USA, shared a report that featured Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings on X, formerly known as Twitter. It indicated that Liberty's holding company Monomoy Capital Partners has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to left-wingers.

"I pulled the FEC reports on the company and found approximately $400,000 over the last 10 cycles of max donations to Democrats," Kirk disclosed via the social media platform, adding that "Liberty Safe's current CEO Justin Hillenbrand was a founding partner of Monomoy and donated $4,600 to 'Obama for America.'"

The most notable among the many donations listed were the ones to Senators Raphael Warnock of Georgia, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, and Mark Kelly of Arizona as well as to former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes of Wisconsin, who lost a bid to unseat Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson in November. All of the donees are pro-gun control.

The parent company issued a news release back in 2021, announcing the acquisition of Liberty. According to the firm, the move is "another great example of Monomoy partnering with a branded, market-leading, consumer products manufacturer that has garnered an enthusiast customer base throughout the company's history."

Liberty Safe currently on the "hot seat" for providing customer's safe codes to the FBI

Kirk's report comes as Liberty Safe is in the middle of a big controversy as it reportedly gave to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) the password to a customer's safe at the law enforcement agency's request. A major backlash is something that the company is enduring at the moment.

It all started on September 4 when commentators Keith and Kevin Hodge, also known as the Hodge Twins, posted on X claiming that their friend was raided by the feds over the "J6 Capitol attack." "His name is Nathan Hughes and he's from Fayetteville, Arkansas. The feds called the manufacturer of his Liberty Gun Safe and got the passcode to get into it too. All for protesting at the Capitol over 2 1/2 years ago,'" the post included.

Meanwhile, Hughes confirmed the story the following day via a video where he said that the Utah-based safe maker gave the FBI "a master code to get into my gun safe." "Pretty crazy, didn't know safe companies would do that, so I feel like a lot of our gun safes are not actually safe," he said. The FBI also allegedly turned off his security cameras and held his girlfriend at gunpoint.

In response, Liberty released a statement confirming they gave the FBI Hughes' code. "Liberty Safe was contacted by the FBI [on Aug. 30.] requesting the access code to the safe of an individual for whom they had the warrant to search their property." It claimed in the statement that it has repeatedly denied requests for access codes without a warrant in the past and that they do not give out combinations without proper legal documentation being provided by authorities.

The company also said that it "has long adhered to industry standards by maintaining a secure database of factory-set combinations" as a courtesy to customers who might need them for various reasons. However, existing customers may now visit the website and double-check. They can "fill out the form to have records of their access codes expunged," it said.

The firm's social media account continued to receive negative feedback from users amid its announcement of changes in policies. A lot of them are calling for a boycott. (Related: "Gun safes' Bud Light": Liberty Safe receives massive backlash for providing customer’s safe code to FBI.)

Collin Rugg, the co-owner of alternative news site Trending Politics, together with other conservative influencers, is now calling for boycotting and canceling orders from Liberty Safe. "We have officially found the Bud Light of gun safes. Enjoy going out of business, @libertysafeinc," referring to the controversial beer brand that experienced a sad demise after pushing its "woke LGBTQIA ideologies" to the public.

The Federalist Co-founder Sean Davis replied to Liberty's initial statement saying that without a court order, Liberty is not required to give the FBI anything. "You voluntarily gave out a combination over a warrant, per your own release, that didn't apply to you or your property. Maybe start marketing your stuff as Bud Light storage," Davis said.

Michael Seifert, founder of conservative online marketplace PublicSq., agreed, saying no safe company should ever have access to the property of their customers, let alone sell them out to the feds. "It's an unbelievable breach of privacy. Give them the Bud Light treatment," he said.

For Kirk, "Liberty Safe is an enemy to gun owners. They could have fought the warrant – as Apple did – instead, they buckled and bent over. Your guns are not safe with the @libertysafeinc. Boycott. Ridicule. Ruin their company."
