Former Space Force Lt. Col. Matthew Lohmeier shared this sentiment to the Epoch Times. The erstwhile officer was removed from his command in 2021 for opposing critical race theory (CRT) in the military branch. He pointed out that service members often avoid discussing political topics as they focus on the sole mission of protecting the nation.
"Americans should know that when someone signs up to wear the uniform of their country, they're trained early on to leave political baggage at the door and to be rather apolitical while acting in an official capacity," Lohmeier said. "There is something that supersedes those topics for men and women in uniform – and that's a particular mission in support of national security."
Lohmeier noted that under the Biden administration, "left-wing activists have essentially been given a bully pulpit" they use to promote ideas such as CRT, DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) standards and the LGBT agenda.
These ideas, he added, are "divisive in nature because not everyone aligns with or agrees with those agendas. Lohmeier added that such ideas are viewed by some as a distraction from the military's proper priorities.
According to him, most service members striving to remain apolitical "are finding themselves in a hyper-politicized and sexualized work environment at the moment." If they oppose the environment, "they are labeled as politically partisan and simply 'part of the problem' and are ostracized for it."
Lohmeier ultimately noted: "These agendas strike at the values of the military and its role in defending the Constitution."
"While the military has always been – by and large – a reflection of broader American society, there is something very different going on right now in this current administration," Lohmeier said. "At the forefront of the cultural dialogue in the military is what has been driven by policy."
According to him, it can be argued that the military became more political during the Clinton and Obama administrations. However, the erstwhile Space Force member noted that "something radically, fundamentally shifted [in the military] under the current administration" – with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin accelerating things.
During the time of former President Donald Trump in September 2020, federal agencies were banned from conducting diversity and inclusion training to combat racial and sexual stereotyping. The executive order (EO) issued by Trump dubbed the training as "divisive, anti-American propaganda" funded by taxpayers. However, President Joe Biden rescinded Trump's order upon coming into office in January 2021 and issued several EOs promoting DEI in the federal government.
Despite this prevalence of wokeism in the military, Lohmeier recounted that enough opposition caused the cancellation of a planned drag show at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. According to him, the drag show was supposed to be hosted at the officer's club and was sponsored using tax dollars.
Lohmeier's family and others were concerned about the event – which led to efforts to stop it. The effort was ultimately successful, and the supposed drag show did not push through. "The LGBT agenda is every bit as divisive for our military as the Marxist-rooted CRT. It's every bit as divisive as the diversity and inclusion training that needs to be eliminated," the former officer noted.
"While there are thousands concerned about drag queen shows and story hours, it only took one person to send a request for help and it made all the difference. The strength of the military is in its unity, not in its diversity."
