National security experts call for peace and end of arms shipments to Ukraine
05/23/2023 // Arsenio Toledo // Views

A group of national security experts published a full-page advertisement on the New York Times calling for a swift and diplomatic end to the conflict in Ukraine and for the U.S. to end all of its military aid shipments to the country.

The national security experts in question are the members of the Eisenhower Media Network (EMN), an organization of former military, intelligence and national security officials with expertise in military, foreign policy and national security issues. (Related: RFK Jr. on Ukraine: Russia is fighting an EXISTENTIAL war and can't afford to lose.)

In the EMN's letter, the organization calls American involvement in Russia's special military operation in Ukraine an "unmitigated disaster" and urges Congress and President Joe Biden "to end the war speedily through diplomacy, especially given the dangers of military escalation that could spiral out of control."

The group continued: "If the U.S. persists in backing the plan for a Ukrainian offensive, instead of encouraging [Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky] to seize the moment for diplomacy, it will share considerable responsibility for the failure to seize the chance for peace, and for the appalling and ever-rising human costs of war."

The EMN's letter was signed by 14 members of the organization, including its director and associate director, Dennis Fritz and Matthew Hoh, respectively. Most of the signatories are returned members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

EMN: War is a highly profitable racket for a select few

The EMN's letter also pointed out how much the conflict in Ukraine has cost taxpayers not just in the U.S. but also around the world. The group noted that the U.S. had so far sent $37 billion worth of military aid to Ukraine, around a third of the approximately $100 billion the entire world put together has provided to Ukraine.

"War, it's been said, is a racket, one that is highly profitable for a select few," the group wrote. One American general has even bragged about how the West has supplied Ukraine with over 600 different weapons systems, all no doubt paid for by their respective taxpayers.

The EMN said the lucrative nature of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine makes it unlikely that the U.S. will listen to the growing calls for the fighting to end.

Since at least June 2022, the position that Biden and other high-ranking U.S. officials have taken is that the war will only end in a diplomatic settlement. But they have repeatedly insisted that they need to continue arming Ukraine to put it "in the strongest possible position at the negotiating table."

Biden himself has vowed that Washington will continue to arm Kyiv "as long as it takes." The EMN fears that this attitude toward the conflict could result in a catastrophe.

High-level discussions between officials from Kyiv and Moscow have been rare, and since the U.S. has refused to do so, several other nations and influential figures, including China, Brazil and Pope Francis, have attempted to take on the mantle of pushing for a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

"We consider President Biden's promise to back Ukraine 'as long as it takes' to be a license to pursue ill-defined and ultimately unachievable goals," wrote the EMN. "We cannot and will not endorse the strategy of fighting Russia to the last Ukrainian."

"We advocate for a meaningful and genuine commitment to diplomacy, specifically an immediate ceasefire and negotiations without any disqualifying or prohibitive preconditions," continued the EMN. "Deliberate provocations delivered the Russia-Ukraine war. In the same manner, deliberate diplomacy can end it."
