But that said, an indictment of Trump could have the opposite effect his political enemies want, according to several current and former allies who spoke to The Epoch Times.
“This is a huge tipping point and turning point in America that has to be pulled back, and we cannot allow for our justice system to be weaponized,” Jenna Ellis, who represented the 2020 Trump campaign, told the outlet.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, had previously speculated that if Donald Trump were to be arrested next week as part of the Manhattan District Attorney Office's investigation into hush money payments, he could win by a landslide. Ellis considers that to be very possible.
“The American people are so outraged at how law enforcement and the institutions of America are being weaponized against conservatives and Republicans, especially Donald Trump and his allies,” said Ellis, who went on to suggest that what is likely to happen is a bid by Democrats to “drain [Trump’s] war chest because they know that mounting a defense will be very costly.”
“I think that there is a genuinely good possibility that Trump will gain a lot of followers who are sick and tired of seeing justice perverted in this manner," she added.
In response to the news, a spokesperson for Trump, Steven Cheung, issued a statement to Fox News Digital criticizing Bragg and calling his investigation a “witch hunt” while alleging that Bragg was under the influence of President Biden and “radical Democrats.”
“President Donald J. Trump is completely innocent, he did nothing wrong, and even the biggest, most Radical Left Democrats are making that clear,” Cheung said. “From Russia, Russia, Russia, to the Mueller Hoax, to Impeachment Hoaxes 1 and 2, and even the Unlawful Mar-a-Lago Raid, Democrats have investigated and attacked President Trump since before he was elected – and they’ve failed every time.
“Now Democrats are at it again, pushing the ‘Nuclear Button’ and attacking a President because of a disgraced extortionist,” he added. “This is happening because President Trump is leading in the polls by a large margin against both Democrats and Republicans, and there’s never been anything so blatant in American political history.”
He added: “Everyone knows it’s a sham. In fact, the Department of Justice stocked the DA’s office with top people from DC to help ‘Get Trump’ at a local level. Americans will not tolerate Radical Left Democrats turning our justice system into an injustice system to influence a presidential election, which is all they want to do. Our Country is not going to let this happen. This will backfire massively for the Democrat Party, and end in disgrace for our Nation.”
Before 2016, Ellis noted in her interview with The Epoch Times, a looming indictment ahead of a presidential elction would have doomed that person's chances “just because the American people believed in the legitimacy of law enforcement and the legitimacy of an indictment.”
That's no longer the case, and Democrats are to blame for it.
“But here, I think that virtually everyone who is paying attention, and certainly anyone on the Republican and conservative side that cares about due process and justice, knows that this is a political tactic. And so they’re not going to care," she said.
“If the Manhattan DA indicts President Trump, he will ultimately win even bigger than he is already going to win,” predicted Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Twitter.
“Donald Trump is the voice of the American people. And people in this country get really angry when they are falsely accused, and when they are targeted by a weaponized federal government,” Hogan Gidley, a former White House spokesman under Trump, told The Epoch Times. “So they will rally in support of someone who is falsely accused, whether that be someone from main street or someone from Mar-a-Lago.”
