Indiana doctor slammed for tweet celebrating abortion
02/23/2023 // Arsenio Toledo // Views

An abortion doctor in Indiana is receiving backlash, even from pro-abortion groups, for posting a tweet praising abortion that featured a picture of her posing with one of the main instruments used in the fatal surgical procedure.

Dr. Katie McHugh, who describes herself as a "queer" obstetrician-gynecologist, tweeted on Friday, Feb. 17, claiming that abortion is "moral," "common" and a "family value. The tweet came with a picture of her posing with an instrument inserted into a woman's cervix to suck the fetus out of the uterus during the early stages of pregnancy. "Happy Friday! #Abortion care is still legal in Indiana. We're doing everything we can to keep it that way," she wrote. "#AbortionIsHealthcare – as well as a community priority, a family value, and a normal part of life! Abortion is moral, common and it isn't going away. Neither are we."

McHugh's attitude toward abortion makes even pro-choicers question their beliefs

McHugh's indifference regarding a medical procedure that even women who undertake it do not take lightly received largely negative backlash, including from those in favor of allowing abortions.

"Seeing how happy you are to kill babies makes me question my pro-choice stance," wrote former Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial artist Jake Shields. "This is [the] face of a truly evil person."

"Abortion should *never* be common and should *never* be celebrated. I say this as someone who's against making it illegal," wrote Joshua Reed Eakle, marketing director for the libertarian organization Students for Liberty. "What an absolutely unnerving and creepy post."

"I'm largely pro-choice, but I question if I'm on the right side of the argument when I see providers get excited to perform abortions," wrote one person from Los Angeles.

"Why are you smiling with an abortion tool? Even in the most straightforward of circumstances it still isn't smile-worthy," responded one person.

"All they wanted was safe, legal and rare. Now we have 'moral, common and isn't going away,'" observed one other person.

Despite the massive backlash from both the pro-life and pro-abortion communities, McHugh doubled down on her beliefs, writing: "Despite the *many* hateful comments, I am proud to normalize #abortion care, smile at and for people needing help and honor the people choosing abortion."

"I celebrate the chance to honor people as they choose their lives, families and futures," she continued. "#AbortionIsHealthcare, always."

Indiana pro-abortion activists blocking state abortion ban

In early August 2020, the state government of Indiana passed a ban on most abortions done in the state, allowing exceptions for cases of rape, incest, cases in which the life of the mother would be at risk if she continued the pregnancy and cases when the unborn baby suffers from an irremediable medical condition that is incompatible with sustained life after birth.

When the law took effect, pro-abortion doctors like McHugh at the time considered moving to neighboring abortion-friendly states like Illinois to continue providing abortion services.

A month later, a state court passed an injunction on the ban, pending a lawsuit regarding the potential constitutionality of the abortion ban. The state supreme court even denied a request by the state's attorney general for the law to take effect pending the resolution of its cases.

A second injunction was passed in December that argued the law violated a pre-existing state law protecting the religious liberties of Jewish and Muslim women and women with "general spiritual beliefs."
