Prisha Mosley, a former female-to-male (FTM) transgender, had a slew of medical complications dating back to the more than five years she spent on testosterone and a double mastectomy that a plastic surgeon performed shortly after she turned 18. Many of those complications surround her endocrine system, which encompasses the hormones that regulate nearly every process in the body, from metabolism to growth and development, emotions, mood, sexual function and sleep.
But every primary care physician, endocrinologist, obstetrician and gynecologist she approached on her insurance list has turned her away or said they can't help.
"I was under the impression that my doctors, who were transitioning me, loved me. They said they didn't want me to die, they were saving my life, they were worried about me, and they wanted me to be healthy and happy," Mosley told the Federalist's Kelsey Bolar. "Clearly, they don't love me. As soon as it's not profitable, they don't want to help."
She was hoping to get her endocrine system to work so she could get off or be on less psychiatric medicine. Low testosterone and estrogen will cause depression and anxiety and she was being medicated for both.
The detransitioner also hopes she'll experience some muscle and fat redistribution with estrogen supplements because, the years of testosterone 'therapy" broadened her neck and shoulders, causing her chronic pain in her upper body.
She also told Bolar that her throat is sore, she could no longer sing or raise her voice and she suffers hair loss. She is also seeking medical attention for severe sexual dysfunction, painful and irregular periods and atrophy.
Mosley, who has a long and complicated history with borderline personality disorder, anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses, said she used transitioning as a cover for her deep-rooted mental health issues.
Now as a detransitioner, her therapy treatment is in disarray as she lost her health insurance because she couldn’t afford it. Under her new insurance, instead of being charged $10 per therapy appointment, she is being charged $96. To date, she owes nearly $3,000 to her therapist.
"I feel like it's like a bottomless pit – the medical needs – and I need the therapy because I can barely do this," she lamented and swore she absolutely will not, once again, medicalize her body without taking care of her mind. Professional organizations claim to offer supportive care for "transgender" and "gender diverse" individuals, however, the offer does not apply to individuals seeking to detransition.
Mosley recently testified in favor of banning chemical and surgical treatments for minors that medically harmed them.
Tennessee's Senate Bill 0001 is quickly moving forward through various committees and is on its way to becoming law, with the help of her testimony and other detransitioners'. The said bill will bar the use of puberty-blocking drugs, cross-sex hormones and gender-related surgeries on minors statewide.
"As a detransitioned adult I recognize the importance that civil action laws like this would provide in holding the people accountable who did this to me as a child and preventing other children from being harmed," said Mosley.
"I was a little girl, but now I will never know what it is fully like. I fully support a bill that protects youth from the undeniable harm caused by so-called 'gender-affirming care,'" she added.
A detransitioned man, Abel Garcia, was not given the opportunity to speak so he released a clip of his prepared statement on social media.
He said: "Looking at today's climate, I am very worried and concerned because if I, as an adult, was led astray by the medical system and those who were supposed to help me, what hope do children have today?"
Garcia chemically and surgically transitioned as a young adult and now experiences urinary tract problems and genital atrophy as a result of hormone therapy.
Those testifying against the bill included a wealth of misinformation in their prepared statements, including the debunked narrative that failing to affirm a child's transgender identity with medical treatments increases the risk of suicide.
Senator Jack Johnson, who co-authored the bill, was able to clear up some of the misinformation before the vote was taken. The state Senate Judiciary Committee passed the bill with a 7-2 vote on Feb. 7.
