The Chief Medical Advisor to the White House and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is already claiming that children all over the country are getting sick and filling up hospitals.
"This is particularly problematic because as we get into the flu season, you might have a convergence of three significant respiratory illnesses at one time in children," said Fauci. "RSV, influenza and, of course, there's always the concern, as we get into winter, about a surge of a new variant of COVID-19." "As people pull back, no longer wear masks, congregate together, then you get a surge of infections that might have been spread out over a period of time," he added.
Other health officials are supporting Fauci's claims. Dr. Alpana Waghmare, an infectious diseases expert at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and a physician at Seattle Children's Hospital, claimed that "everything" is coming back "with a vengeance."
Tara Campbell, reporting for ABC7 out of California, pushed this claim by publishing her interview with Fauci. She wrote that hospitals in at least 43 states, including California, have already informed the station that they are also grappling with supposed early influxes of the flu, RSV and other respiratory illnesses.
"As of today, we are seeing equal numbers of COVID, flu and RSV and that's really concerning because we are very early for flu and RSV activity," said Dr. Diego Hijano, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. "It's going to be a rough winter."
David Muir, on his ABC News program "World News Tonight," further claimed that the "tripledemic" virus threat America is facing is hitting children particularly hard. Erielle Reshef of ABC News claimed that around 75 percent of the country's approximately 40,000 pediatric beds in hospitals are currently occupied.
Reshef further claimed that the number of adults hospitalized for influenza has risen from around 1,332 who were admitted in early October to more than 1,600 as of press time.
She ended her reporting segment on "World News Tonight" by pointing out that there are vaccines available for COVID-19 and the flu, and that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claims it is safe for children to take both at the same time.
Coincidentally, Pfizer is developing a vaccine for RSV that is currently in late-stage clinical trials. The Big Pharma company is also developing an antiviral drug for the virus.
Many doctors have echoed their support for people getting up to date on their COVID-19 and flu vaccines. Andrew Read, an evolutionary biologist at Penn State University, even claimed that people not keeping up with their COVID-19 vaccinations is to blame for the rise in cases.
"You've got this waning COVID immunity, coinciding with the impact of the flu coming along here, and RSV," said Read. "We're in uncharted territory here."
Waghmare added that people with weakened immune systems are still at risk "even despite getting all of the recommended or even additional doses of vaccine."
Dr. Aubree Gordon, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan, said the latest boosters by Pfizer and Moderna raise antibody levels even if they are not specifically designed for the newer variants. She also expressed her support for people getting the flu vaccine.
"Most of the time it doesn't make you very sick, but sometimes it can," said Gordon of the flu. "We do have an effective vaccine against influenza, so I'd encourage people to go get vaccinated."
