FBI report: Over twice as many people killed with knives or other cutting instruments compared to rifles
10/18/2022 // Kevin Hughes // Views

A report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) revealed that more people were killed by knives and other cutting instruments than by rifles last year.

According to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for the year 2021, 447 people were killed with rifles while 1,035 people were killed with "knives or cutting instruments." This meant the number of victims stabbed or hacked to death were more than twice the number of victims shot to death using rifles.

The report also observed a similar trend for 2020, with victims of knife killings more than 3.5 times higher than victims of rifle killings. For that year, 454 people were shot and killed with rifles while 1,732 were killed using knives or cutting instruments.

The UCR for prior years also reflected that knife killings were higher than those committed using rifles. (Related: FBI's latest stats say violent crime, gun crimes are DOWN: Why are the Democrats and media lying about it?)

In 2019, only 375 people were killed with rifles compared to the 1,525 stabbed to death – a difference of more than four times. UCR figures for 2018, meanwhile, revealed that the number of stabbing victims were over five times higher than shooting victims.

The high number of stabbing deaths over homicides by rifle changes every year, with knives and other cutting tools being utilized in homicides more often than rifles in previous years. More people have been stabbed or hacked to death between 2018 and 2021 than those killed with rifles.

Moreover, a report by NTD stated that murders rose from 22,000 in 2020 to 22,900 in 2021, or a 4.3 percent increase. It also showed that the total estimated number of violent crimes – which involves murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault – reduced by one percent nationwide in 2021.

The latest data came from 11,794 of 18,806 law enforcement agencies across the nation that voluntarily filed an extended homicide report, which means the number of murders is possibly higher.

America's murder rate hits 6.9 per 100K people in 2021

The average murder rate in the United States hit 6.9 murders per 100,000 people in 2021 – the highest figure it has been in more than two decades.

Handguns were used in most of those murders followed by firearms of a "type not stated," based on the FBI report. This is probably because the murder rate is usually higher in urban areas than in rural ones. In the U.S., most of the handguns being used in murders are illegally acquired.

Based on the midyear comparison survey from the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA), there were 236,962 incidents of major crimes like robberies and aggravated assaults reported in the first half of this year compared to 226,967 in the same period last year.

Homicides and rapes saw a small reduction, based on the survey. A total of 4,511 homicides was reported in the first six months of 2022 compared to 4,624 in the first six months of 2021, representing a two percent decrease.

MCCA is an organization of police executives and represents the largest cities in the U.S. and Canada. The report covered over 70 major U.S. law enforcement agencies.
