Bloomberg managed to obtain and analyze these text messages between Musk and English actress Talulah Riley, his second wife. While majority of Musk's exchanges with other parties involved funding, his exchanges with Riley mainly focused on politics.
"Please do something to fight wokeism," she wrote in one message, promising to "do anything to help."
Riley's message stemmed from the suspension of satirical news outlet Babylon Bee on Twitter.
"Raiyah and I were talking about it today," she wrote, referencing a conversation with her friend Princess Raiyah bint Hussein of Jordan. "It was a f***ing joke. Why has everyone become so puritanical?"
Shortly after the Bee's suspension, Musk posted a poll about free speech on his Twitter account.
Musk and Riley first tied the knot in 2010 and divorced two years later in 2012. They reconciled in 2013, and broke up for good in 2016 after a second divorce filed by Riley was finalized in October of that year.
In 2018, Musk became domestic partners with Canadian musician Grimes (Claire Elise Boucher) – having two children with her. Grimes later confirmed in March 2022 that she and Musk have broken up on good terms.
The texts were submitted in connection with Musk's lawsuit against the social media platform. Initially purchasing the company for $44 billion, the Tesla CEO later reneged on the deal – leading to court battles. Musk eventually pushed through with his purchase of the company.
On Oct. 3, Musk informed Twitter of his intentions to push through with his acquisition of the Big Tech firm for the original offer price through a letter.
"We received the letter from the Musk parties which they have filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission," Twitter confirmed the following day. Texts also reveal Musk's conversations with Joe Rogan, Jack Dorsey
Aside from Riley, Musk's texts also revealed conversations with podcaster Joe Rogan and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.
"I will provide advice, which they may or may not choose to follow," the Tesla CEO said in response to Rogan's question about "liberating Twitter from the censorship-happy mob." The host of "The Joe Rogan Experience" expressed hope that Musk acquires Twitter, remarking that there should be "a hell of a party" if the deal pushes through.
Musk also spoke with Dorsey, who established Twitter with three others in 2006, about creating an entirely new platform. The former Twitter CEO texted the tech bigwig of South African origin back in March 2022: "Yes, a new platform is needed. It can't be a company. This is why I left."
"I believe it must be an open source protocol, funded by a foundation of sorts that doesn't own the protocol [and] only advances it – a bit like what Signal has done," Dorsey continued. "It can't have an advertising model. This isn't complicated work. It just has to be done right, so it's resilient to what has happened to Twitter."
Musk texted back that he wanted to help out in this endeavor. Dorsey then divulged this interesting tidbit: He previously wanted to get the Tesla CEO on Twitter's board, and when that failed, Dorsey planned on leaving.
"I wanted to talk with you about it after I was all clear because you care so much, get [the new platform's] importance and could [definitely] help in immeasurable ways. I tried my hardest to get you on our board, and our board said no. That's about the time I decided I need to work to leave, as hard as it was for me."
