Vermont high school blocks members of girls’ volleyball team from their own locker room after they complained about presence of trans student

A public high school in Vermont drew criticisms after it prevented its girls' volleyball team from accessing their own locker room. Members of the team reportedly complained about the presence of trans student in the locker room.

The dispute occurred at Randolph Union High School in Randolph, Central Vermont. It started when the transgender student made an inappropriate comment while members of the girls' volleyball team were getting changed.

According to state policy, students in Vermont can play on sports teams and use locker rooms that correspond to their desired gender.

"The use of restrooms and locker rooms by transgender students requires schools to consider numerous factors," stated the Vermont Agency of Education's policy. "A transgender student should not be required to use a locker room or restroom that conflicts with the student's gender identity."

Blake Allen, one of the girls who is currently barred from using the locker room after she and several other teammates objected to allowing the trans student-athlete in the girls' locker room, told local news outlet WCAX that she and her teammates shouldn't have to be punished for expressing how unsafe they felt.

"My mom wants me to do this interview to try to make a change," she said. "It's a huge thing. Everyone's asking, 'So, why aren't you allowed in the locker room?'" (Related: Guamanian rugby coach sounds alarm as 3 female players injured by biologically male transgender athlete in a match.)

"I feel like for stating my opinion that I don't want a biological man changing with me, I should not have harassment charges or bullying charges," Allen said. "They should all be dropped."

Allen noted that her issue is not necessarily with having the trans student on the girls' volleyball team, but specifically in the student's presence in the girls' locker room. "There are biological boys that go into the girls' bathroom, but never a locker room," she said.

School authorities defend transgender student-athlete

Allen noted that this is not the first time this issue was raised. She and her fellow team members and their parents have approached school officials regarding this issue. They were rebuffed, told that under state law the transgender student could use whatever locker room aligned with their declared gender.

School officials added in an email to families that the school has "plenty of space where students who feel uncomfortable with the laws may change in privacy."

"They want all the girls who feel uncomfortable – so pretty much 10 girls – to get changed in a single stall bathroom, which would take over 30 minutes. Where, if one person got changed separately, it would take a minute, like no extra time," said Allen.

Instead of separating the transgender student, the school noted in its email to families that it is instead conducting an investigation into allegations that the girls on the volleyball team harassed the trans student.

Randolph High School Co-Principal Lisa Floyd said in another email that student safety was the school district's top priority and that when policies are violated – such as the supposed case of harassment – disciplinary action consistent with the law will be taken.

This decision has bewildered parents. One who spoke with the Daily Signal wondered why the school was prioritizing the needs of one trans-identifying student over those of nearly a dozen other girls.

"We allowed a child who is biologically the opposite sex – male – go in a locker room where [biological] girls were getting fully changed," said the mother. "The [biologically male] child was not changing and sat in the back and watched girls getting changed. That made girls feel uncomfortable, made girls feel violated and not protected."
