Planned Parenthood caught editing abortion fact sheet to convince people babies don’t have heartbeats at six weeks

Planned Parenthood issued a stealth edit of its fact sheet on fetal development to alter language that supports the idea that fetuses have a heartbeat after six weeks in the womb.

Fox News noted in a report that the abortion organization edited the language on its website indicating that babies have a heartbeat at six weeks as early as July 25. Life News noted the change on August 22.

In the organization's "What happens during week 5-6" section of their website, the original fact sheet stated that "a very basic beating heart and circulatory system develop."

However, the edited section now reads: "A part of the embryo starts to show cardiac activity. It sounds like a heartbeat on an ultrasound, but it's not a fully-formed heart – it's the earliest stage of the heart developing."

Despite the change, Planned Parenthood's gestational information at weeks seven and eight has not changed and still states that at such point, "the heart has formed."

This new "fact sheet" is in conflict with the National Library of Medicine, which said that five-week-old fetuses have a heart that begins to develop, which then "beats at a regular rhythm" on the sixth week and can be seen by vaginal ultrasound.

The United Kingdom's National Health Service also said that the heart forms as a simple "tube-like structure" around the fifth week when the baby already has some of its own blood vessels and blood begins to circulate.

Conservatives widely noticed the change after Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams suggested that fetal heartbeats are "manufactured sounds" that are designed to control a woman's body.

Abrams was likely taking aim at the 2019 Georgia law that banned most abortions in the state after doctors can detect a fetal heartbeat, which usually comes at around six weeks. And since most women remain unaware of their pregnancies in the first six weeks, the law effectively bans all abortion in the state.

The law faced numerous hurdles, but due to the overturn of Roe v. Wade earlier this year, it finally went into effect, which Abrams is not taking lightly.

She promised that abortion will be "front and center" of her campaign, adding that "women deserve full citizenship in the United States and certainly in the state of Georgia, and they are being denied that because of Brian Kemp's six-week ban." Kemp beat Abrams in 2018 and their battle this year marks Georgia's first gubernatorial rematch since 1950.

Social media erupts following Abrams' comment

Social media erupted following Abrams' heartbeat comment, with one OB-GYN disagreeing with her unfounded opinion.

U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall of Kansas, who is also an OB-GYN and a member of the GOP Doctors Caucus, described Abrams' comments as "factually incorrect," saying that "there's no man behind the curtain," and that "babies have a real heartbeat at six weeks."

Meghan McCain, the daughter of former Republican U.S. Senator John McCain, also slammed Abrams. "Hearing my babies heartbeats at six weeks is hands down one of the most exciting, liberating and most beautiful moments of my entire life," she wrote.

A spokesman for Abrams' campaign said the candidate already stated her support for limits in line with Roe and Casey, and that the doctors have been clear that the so-called "heartbeat law" is not medically accurate.

The "heartbeat" law referred to the laws put in place that prevented abortions if a heartbeat can be detected. (Related: Abortion advocates claim "medical" reasons for abortion include the mother changing her mind about pregnancy.)
