DeSantis made his intentions known during the Unite and Win Rally in Pittsburgh, last Aug. 19. He lambasted COVID-19 mandates at the gathering held in support of gubernatorial candidate and State Sen. Doug Mastriano.
"Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now admitting, 'no reason to treat [vaccinated] or [unvaccinated] any differently.' Well, guess what that means? Every single mandate that the federal government [and] any of the states [are] doing must be removed. It's wrong," said the governor.
"And if anybody was forced into doing this and ended up with an adverse reaction, they should be able to sue over that," he added. DeSantis insinuated that both vaccine manufacturers and the federal government will be liable if his proposal does get some serious consideration.
DeSantis' comments came days after the CDC updated its COVID-19 guidance. The public health agency rescinded several recommendations such as physical distancing and quarantine for those exposed to a COVID-positive individual.
"CDC's COVID-19 prevention recommendations no longer differentiate based on a person's vaccination status. [This is] because breakthrough infections occur, though they are generally mild, and persons who have had COVID-19 but are not vaccinated have some degree of protection against severe illness from their previous infection," it said in the Aug. 19 edition of its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).
Back in January, the CDC acknowledged the superiority of natural immunity over vaccines.
In the Jan. 28 edition of the MMWR, it stated that natural immunity was at least three times as effective as COVID-19 vaccines in preventing people from being infected and hospitalized. The CDC's findings applied to the B16172 delta variant known to cause breakthrough infections, which was prevalent at the time of the MMWR's publishing. Earlier, the Florida governor pointed out that both the federal government and pharmaceutical companies have lied about the efficacy and safety of the experimental mRNA vaccines. According to DeSantis, this deception sought to get as many people to take the clot shot as possible.
He earlier denounced the White House for lying about his state's stance on COVID-19 vaccines.
"The White House is lying about it, surprise," DeSantis said on June 17. "Not surprised the White House would lie, [and] definitely not surprised that legacy media would amplify the lie – because that's what they do. The state of Florida … came out with an article saying that [we have] not ordered, [the] Florida Department of Health has not ordered mRNA jabs for the babies. Yes, we didn't. We recommend against it."
DeSantis' comments at the time came as a response to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre telling reporters that the Sunshine State permitted health care providers to order doses of and inject the mRNA vaccine for children aged six months to five years.
"Even though Gov. DeSantis reversed course and is now ordering vaccines, we will pull every lever to get pediatricians across Florida vaccines as quickly as possible. This is an encouraging first step, and we urge the state to order vaccines for its state and local health departments so that all Florida parents have the opportunity to get their children vaccinated."
Three days later, on June 20, the Florida governor reiterated that his state will not order mRNA vaccines – contradicting Jean-Pierre's statement.
"That was always that; we still have not ordered it, we are not going to order it. If someone wants to make a different decision, I would just caution people to look at the actual data in the clinical trial," DeSantis said.
"We are not going to have any programs where we’re trying to jab six-month-old babies with mRNA. That's just the reality. I think what they thought would happen was that we’d be embarrassed about it."
