"For Twitter to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral, which effectively means upsetting the far right and the far left equally," wrote Musk on his personal Twitter account.
In another post on his account, Musk wrote that a majority of the attacks against him are coming in "thick and fast" and "primarily from the left," which did not surprise him.
"I should be clear that the right will probably be a little unhappy too," he wrote. "My goal is to maximize area under the curve of total human happiness, which means the [80 percent] of people in the middle."
Since Twitter's board of directors accepted Musk's offer to take over the social media platform, Musk has made it clear that his goal is to promote free speech on Twitter. He noted that Twitter has engaged in censorship in the past, and he also criticized the site's content moderation policies.
"The extreme antibody reaction from those who fear free speech says it all. By 'free speech,' I simply mean that which matches the law. I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law," wrote Musk, explaining that when his takeover of Twitter is complete, it will become a haven for free speech while still abiding by the law.
"If people want less free speech, they will ask the government to pass laws to that effect," he wrote. "Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people."
Since Musk's takeover was accepted, the company has confirmed that hundreds of thousands of users have permanently deleted their accounts on the website. (Related: Left-wing media, extremists tell the truth for a change: They want censorship and they are attacking Elon Musk to prove it.)
While a proper analysis of the political leanings of every single deleted account will be impossible to achieve, it is noted that many left-leaning politicians and celebrities lost followers.
Leading the pack is Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose Twitter followers plummeted by nearly 33,000. Former First Lady Michelle Obama lost nearly 20,000 followers and singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, who has endorsed Democratic politicians in the past, lost around 17,000 followers.
Other prominent left-wing individuals who lost followers include former President Barack Obama and former British Leader of the Opposition and leader of the left-wing Labor Party. Jeremy Corbyn.
Meanwhile, prominent conservative politicians have gained hundreds of thousands of new followers since Musk's takeover.
Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene gained nearly 150,000 new followers. Her massive increase is followed by Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who gained around 120,000 new followers.
There has been some speculation that the massive changes in follower counts from different left-wing and right-wing politicians and personalities were the result of action from Twitter "cleaning house" in preparation for Musk's full acquisition of the platform. A spokesperson for the network has denied this claim, stating that they were the result of organic activity, likely from users deleting their accounts and other users creating new ones.
"While we continue to take action on accounts that violate our spam policy which can affect follower counts, these fluctuations appear to largely be a result of an increase in new account creation and deactivation," said the spokesperson.
