Shanghai residents are being ASSAULTED by authorities for not complying with COVID-19 lockdown orders

Law enforcement personnel in Shanghai have assaulted many of the city's residents to enforce compliance with Beijing's ineffective "zero-COVID" strategy.

As of April 7, Shanghai reported 17,077 new cases of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the city's total since March to over 90,000 cases. This outbreak has turned Shanghai into the epicenter of China's latest wave of COVID-19 infections.

In response, the communist authorities in Beijing implemented its ineffective "zero-COVID" strategy by locking down the entire city and ushering in more than 10,000 health workers from all over the country, including 2,000 military medics, to assist in the anti-COVID-19 efforts.

These health workers, along with the city's own healthcare workers, local police, other municipal employees and volunteers have been made responsible for mass testing, contact tracing and enforcement of the city's extreme lockdown regulations.

These stringent restrictions have drawn the ire of the city's 26 million residents, who are chafing at the lack of freedoms available to them and the lack of available essential supplies such as food. In one video that has since gone viral, at least eight officials wearing full-body personal protective gear – at least six of them are said to be police officers – were recorded repeatedly punching and kicking a young resident from the western Shanghai district of Songjiang.

The victim can be seen covering his head with his arms to protect himself, and later attempting to run from the officers before being chased down and assaulted again. The young individual is said to have violated Shanghai's extreme COVID-19 lockdown regulations, but it is not entirely clear which one and how many of those laws he violated.

"The pandemic prevention is the top priority [in Shanghai], everything else is less important," said an unidentified officer with a local police station who spoke with the Epoch Times. "What's the point of reporting the negative side of such an issue?"

The officer refused to confirm or deny the incident, and added that any inquiries regarding the assault should be made directly to the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau, the city's main law enforcement body.

These incidents are happening all over the city. In another video taken in a different part of Songjiang District, one city worker in white protective gear can be seen pushing a city resident to the ground and then stomping on his head and repeatedly kicking him in the back.

Another video from an unknown part of Shanghai shows a law enforcement officer in protective gear forcibly dragging a woman by the arms out of her apartment because she refused to submit to a mandatory COVID-19 test.

Chinese officials tell Shanghai residents: Control your thirst for freedom

As part of the city's enforcement strategy, officials in Shanghai have resorted to employing drones with loudspeakers to broadcast messages reminding residents to abide by the rules and not protest the lockdown.

In one video posted on the Chinese microblogging social media platform Weibo, a law enforcement drone can be seen flying over residential buildings after many residents went to their balconies to sing in protest over the lack of supplies available to them during lockdown.

The drone, with a female voice, could be heard telling the protesters: "Please comply with COVID restrictions. Control your soul's thirst for freedom. Do not open your windows and sing."

Other videos coming out of Shanghai show robot dogs with loudspeakers strapped to their backs patrolling the streets and broadcasting similar messages to get residents to comply with COVID-19 protocols.

Shanghai's lockdown began on March 28, and it was supposed to end around a week later. Given the rising COVID-19 cases it is clear that the lockdown has not prevented the spread of the virus. Given Beijing's reluctance to admit fault or even to change how it deals with coronavirus, it is likely that Shanghai's residents will continue to suffer the effects of the tyrannical lockdown for a while longer.
