Multiple cities declare curfews as Antifa riots continue
06/03/2020 // Arsenio Toledo // Views

On Sunday night, at least 40 cities across the U.S. – including Washington D.C. – implemented curfews in response to the continuing riots and protests organized by radical left-wing terror group Antifa. Some cities that have placed curfews include Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, Portland, Richmond, Rochester, Saint Paul, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition, Arizona, Texas and Virginia have enforced emergency measures in their states. In Arizona, the move allows the police to arrest people who plan to riot, loot or cause civil unrest. Meanwhile, in Texas, federal agents stationed in the state will also serve as peace officers. In Virginia, the measure allows local authorities to mobilize resources and manpower, such as the Virginia National Guard, to assist cities dealing with riots. (Related: Additional National Guard units deployed as riots and looting overtake the country.)

These cities have also asked both local and state law enforcement to implement the curfews.

Riots continue even with curfews

Despite the curfews, riots have continued in several cities. In Washington, D.C., protesters stayed out well past the 7 p.m. curfew, with some demonstrating at Lafayette Square, a park facing the White House. Due to heavy police presence, protests at the capital did not devolve into looting.

In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio moved up the curfew to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. However, protesters remained on the streets, even with the new curfew in place. A group of demonstrators tried to cross the Manhattan Bridge from Brooklyn, where they were stopped by police. New York police also arrested people involved in looting and breaking-and-entering events on Tuesday night.

In other cities, enforcing curfews have become extremely violent. In St. Louis, which has a 9 p.m. curfew, four police officers were shot standing at the police line to enforce the curfew late Monday evening. According to St. Louis Chief of Police John Hayden, the protesters had turned violent –  lighting fireworks, throwing rocks and even attempting to throw a petrol bomb.

Trump plays hardball in dealing with riots

With at least 9,300 arrests made since the protests started, President Donald Trump has warned that he will deploy the U.S. military to quell the riots if civil unrest is not dealt with immediately.

Over the past week, Trump has praised the National Guard for their efforts to maintain order. He also criticized protesters, as well as governors and mayors from the Democratic Party, saying that the latter is “too soft” on the protests. He also stated that he will be designating antifa as a terrorist organization.

During a call with governors on Monday, Trump urged governors to be more aggressive and put an end to the riots.

“You have every one of these guys on tape. Why aren't you prosecuting them?” he added.

But Trump may be holding off on deploying the military, as defense officials have told reporters. According to officials, they've tried making the case to the president that the situation does not yet call for deploying active-duty troops, especially since state governors have not requested for military activation.

The Pentagon has drafted contingency plans if ever active-duty troops need to be deployed to deal with the unrest. Based on documents obtained by the Associated Press, army units will be stationed to protect the White House and other federal government buildings in the capital, should law enforcement and the National Guard fail to contain the situation.
