In case you missed it, Bezos and Co. made the decision not to plant one of the company's "HQ2s" in the Queens neighborhood of Long Island City as originally planned, citing fierce opposition from Democrats like AOC who expressed concerns about Amazon's well-documented mistreatment of workers, many of whom are paid very little, forced to work excessively long hours, and in some cases are treated no better than slaves.
To her credit, AOC brought up some valid points about how Amazon's presence in Queens might actually have a negative impact, despite its potential to fuel the local economy. But it's this latter point – the part about Amazon creating thousands of new, and supposedly high-paying jobs, for New Yorkers – that somehow went completely over AOC's head, as revealed in a celebratory tweet she shared after Amazon announced, rather suddenly, that its proposed Queens location was now a no-go.
"Anything is possible," AOC glibly wrote, adding that, "today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers & their neighbors defeated Amazon's corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world."
Again, it's not so much that we disagree with AOC's sentiments on the nature of Amazon, as it truly is an existential threat to everything that is free, independent, and not controlled by some greed-driven technocrat hellbent on global domination. Where AOC loudly proclaims her ignorance has to do with her misguided belief that driving Amazon away is somehow good for the local New York City economy.
The deal proposed by New York Governor Andrew "Infanticide" Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio – a textbook example of fascist economics, it's important to note – would have given Amazon $3 billion in "performance-based" tax breaks. In exchange, New York City would have received tens of thousands of new jobs, and billions of dollars in new tax revenue to offset the $3 billion in corporate handouts.
All of this extra cash would have fixed local infrastructure, including the broken subways that AOC is constantly whining about. But instead of putting the pieces together, AOC instead decided that it was better to simply shoo Amazon away, and magically hope that all of her pet projects will somehow get funded some other way.
But that's not how things work, obviously. Cities like New York City need a steady supply of tax revenue – which means you need people actually working and paying taxes, not just marching in the streets with protest signs – in order to make capital improvements to the luxuries that AOC and her fellow democratic socialists have long taken for granted. These Letfist luddites simply can't comprehend how it all works, which is why they resort to utopian virtue signaling as an alternative.
"Let the irony sink it: AOC wants to raise taxes on the wealthy to fund her utopian socialist agenda, but is also against wealthy people generating taxable income," explains ZeroHedge.com, succinctly illustrating this point. "Once her constituents figure it out, they might realize that they would have been better off if AOC had stayed tending bar."
