Though measles was declared eradicated in the U.S in 2000, it has since made a comeback thanks to the importation of the disease, so to speak, with the constant arrival of third-world migrants from countries where it is still a problem.
"Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease that can be fatal in small children," Inslee said in a statement, Agence France Presse reported. "The existence of more than 26 confirmed cases in the state of Washington creates an extreme public health risk that may quickly spread to other counties.”
According to AFP, health officials are warning that those infected with measles have already exposed others in schools, churches, a dentist’s office, the international airport in Portland, Ore., and area businesses. Worse, the outbreak could just be starting because the incubation period is about two weeks.
Meanwhile, on Friday President Trump agreed to sign legislation that would temporarily reopen the federal government for 21 days while giving lawmakers an opportunity to come up with a longer-term funding bill that includes money for the border wall he’s been calling for since the campaign. (Related: If border walls are immoral like Nancy Pelosi says, are all of these countries immoral too?)
During a speech at the White House in which he laid out the risks to Americans from porous borders, he also renewed a previous threat to use his authority to declare a national emergency so he can secure funds for the wall without waiting for Congress.
It’s bad enough Democratic intransigence on border wall funding is getting Americans killed. Now it’s allowed once-eradicated diseases back into the country as well.
If this outbreak — which the mainstream Left is trying to blame primarily on “anti-vaxxers” — isn’t reason enough for the president to go ahead and declare his emergency, what will be?
