Sitting alongside Bernie Sanders at a National town hall, Cortez introduced an ambitious new tax proposal called the “New Green Deal.” While none of the financial specifics of the plan were discussed, Cortez called on Americans to be “courageous” and support the passing of new climate change laws under one large bill called the “New Green Deal.” Cortez said Americans should learn from the past and look to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s former presidency, which passed a slew of ambitious, publicly-funded government projects.
The climate change laws would ultimately provide a net benefit to the country, Cortez believes. In her own passionately-spoken words, Cortez says the new global warming governance would usher in “economic, social and racial justice.” Not even her enthusiasm can cover for how stupid she really sounds. Trying to sell green energy plans under the banner of “racial justice” is about as far-fetched as it gets.
This “New Green Deal” would give more power to Washington, as progressives take more control over the economy and the energy sector. This plan would be a carbon tax on steroids. The laws would aim to end America’s fossil fuel industry and provide tax subsidies to companies in the solar and wind energy business. When did the democrat party become fascist? New climate change laws would target fuel emissions, setting a limit on gas mileage and making it harder to buy trucks. In order to rid carbon from the atmosphere, new climate laws would fund geo-engineering programs, giving the government more power over the skies. The livelihood of coal miners, recently revived by the Trump Presidency, would be shuttered once again, as progressives in Washington began to dictate their lives. It is irresponsible for Cortez to say there would only be benefits to the new laws and “no costs.” Any dictates on American energy could make parts of the country dependent on foreign energy, causing price fluxes and higher energy prices for American homes.
Cortez says that the public should pay for nationalized green technologies, such as Tesla’s battery-powered vehicles. Cortez thinks that the government should create jobs by mandating that American taxes go toward specific technologies such as Tesla’s. “As a matter of fact, it's not just possible that we will create jobs and economic activity by transitioning to renewable energy, but it's inevitable that we are going to create jobs.” She says that Tesla has already benefited from tax subsidies and now it’s time for the company to go to work for the public by pumping out battery-powered cars that don’t burn fossil fuels.
The passionate young lady did not elaborate on how these new global warming laws would achieve economic justice, let alone social and racial justice. If anything, a new green deal would worsen income inequality and create an unfair advantage for some companies over others. Where is the social justice in these one-size-fits-all policies?
Cortez says, “I believe that the progressive movement is the only movement that has answers right now.” But for some reason the cost and implications of these “answers” is never discussed. The public should only believe that there will be “no cost” -- as Cortez puts it.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will surely be in the spotlight over the next couple years as she tries to explain how America will pay for all these progressive, bombastic proposals, and the consequences that all these climate laws would have on the livelihoods of people across the U.S. In the meantime, she will need to find a better way to sell Americans on the need for “social and racial justice” and learn not use such abstract terms to sell an even more abstract idea called the “New Green Deal.”
