House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., said over the weekend that his panel has seen no evidence of said collusion, but nevertheless, the Mueller probe continues, hence the 13 new indictments.
The Russians’ alleged crime(s)? Interfering with the 2016 presidential election.
Oh, that.
Mueller didn’t name any Americans in this latest round of indictments — including, naturally, members of President Donald J. Trump’s 2016 campaign. In fact, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein made it clear when announcing the indictments that no Americans “wittingly” participated in the Russian operation.
But Mueller’s 13 indictments are puzzling for a number of reasons — not the least of which because they represent one of the greatest geopolitical hypocrisies in modern times, which was not lost on Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center.
In a column for FrontPage Magazine, all Mueller has done thus far is indict “a bunch of Russians associated with a troll farm for interfering with an election” that everyone in the DOJ and FBI thus far has admitted did not change the election outcome — meaning Trump beat Clinton fair and square.
But “the Clinton campaign employed a British foreign agent who used Russian intelligence sources to put together opposition research meant to interfere with the results of a United States election,” he wrote. “Collusion between the Clinton campaign, Steele and the Russians doesn’t require an endless fishing expedition.”
He goes on to point out that foreign governments attempting to interfere with American democracy is not a new thing (and it certainly isn’t for Russia, which, as head of the Soviet Union, regularly sought to undermine U.S. democracy).
In fact, he notes, “Muslims in Gaza famously ran a phone bank for Obama,” as “a Hamas political advisor had declared that he hoped Obama would win.”
The Mueller indictment claims that “the Federal Election Campaign Act… prohibits foreign nationals from making any contributions, expenditures, independent expenditures, or disbursements for electioneering communications.”
However, Greenfield notes, Obama accepted untraceable donations from abroad, while failing to require proof of citizenship as his website even permitted donations from Iran and North Korea.
“The chair of Nigeria’s stock exchange had organized an 'Africans for Obama' fundraiser. The Albanian Socialist Prime Minister had been accused of a scheme to transfer $80,000 to an Obama fundraising committee. Gazans bought and resold Obama t-shirts from the campaign website. And no indictments,” Greenfield wrote. (Related: SHOCKER: FBI had evidence of Clinton-Russian collusion over uranium deal.)
What’s more, none of that was considered election interference and none of those activities generated a special counsel investigation of the former president.
In addition, Mueller’s indictments make us look foolish and weak. And oh-so-political. They are unserious, Greenfield adds, because it’s a toothless response to an allegedly serious breach of American democracy.
But that’s not all. Obama’s State Department paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money to an Israel-based organization which used the money in a campaign to oust current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a 2016 congressional investigation.
The Washington Times reported:
Some $350,000 was sent to OneVoice, ostensibly to support the group’s efforts to back Israeli-Palestinian peace settlement negotiations. But OneVoice used the money to build a voter database, train activists and hire a political consulting firm with ties to President Obama’s campaign — all of which set the stage for an anti-Netanyahu campaign, the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations said in a bipartisan staff report.
No special counsels. No Justice Department investigation. No indictments.
So much of what Mueller is doing is just a continuation of the Democrats’ #NeverTrump campaign, and therefore it is illegitimate.
There is a real threat to the American system of government, but it’s not coming from the Russians, it’s coming from Democrats.
