"We are working to break ingrained habits in the way we speak to and about students, particularly referring to them collectively as 'girls,'" Principal Stephanie Gill announced in a letter recently sent out to parents. Explaining that they were attempting to avoid "misgendering" students because it could be "very hurtful," Gill said the school is embracing "gender neutral language in all our communications with students and parents."
The changes come following officials advising the Girls' School Association to impose gender-neutral language, provide books to children featuring trans parents, and adopt gender-neutral uniforms.
Despite its new sweeping gender identity policies, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls doesn't plan to accept boys — nor even drop "girls" from its title.
The school's banning of the "g-word" hasn't gone over very well. The Daily Mail highlights a few reactions, including one parent who couldn't quite follow the school's logic.
"When I opened the letter I wasn't sure if it was a joke or not. It seems a bit potty to me," said one parent who asked to remain unnamed. "They are talking about diversity, but it's a girls only school. How does that work?"
Another local responded even less graciously. "It's ridiculous," the local told the BBC. "We live in an age where we have to respect people's views and if people have issues around gender and sexuality we have to understand that. But girls should be referred to as girls."
Actor Lance Spencer chimed in by mocking the school's refusal to change its name. "Altrincham Grammar School for Gender Neutrals doesn't quite have the same ring to it," he said, a sentiment echoed by photographer Ian Charles who said things will get a little "confusing" for those reading the school's sign.
The pro-parental choice group Campaign for Real Education's Chris McGovern said that while the school might have good intentions, "children who have issues over their gender identity can be treated with respect without the English language being altered to accommodate them."
