Recently, the Honolulu Police Department in Hawaii sent out a series of letters to residents of the state that use medical marijuana, informing them that they are not allowed to own firearms or ammunition because of their prescription. These residents were also told that they had 30 days to hand in their firearms and ammunition to the Honolulu Police Department, and that if they wish to purchase guns in the future, they must first get permission from a medical doctor.
“This letter is to inform you that under the provisions of the Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS), Section 134-7(a) you are disqualified from firearms ownership, possession, or controlling firearms. Your medical marijuana use disqualifies you from ownership of firearms and ammunition,” the letter reads. It goes on to say that residents who use medical marijuana “have 30 days upon receipt of this letter to voluntarily surrender your firearms, permit and ammunition to the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) or otherwise transfer ownership.”
Where exactly in the Constitution does it say that the American people have a right to keep and bear arms unless they happen to use medical marijuana? At last glance, that’s not what the Second Amendment says. Here again, the liberal democrats have proven that they care very little about the United States Constitution, and are only concerned about advancing their big government agenda. Their hunger for power truly knows no bounds.
Sadly, the push for gun confiscation seems to be starting to gain traction. Last month, The Boston Globe made the case that in order to minimize the number of mass shootings in this country, gun confiscation might be one of the only options we have left. This is nonsense, of course, because it has been proven time and time again that crime rates go down when there are more guns and not less. But then again, liberals have never let facts get in the way of their agenda before, so why would they start now?
After arguing that recent gun control proposals made by the political left haven’t gone far enough, The Boston Globe article stated: “In other words, the proposals aren’t just difficult to enact in the current political climate; their practical effects would also be quite limited. On occasion, though, Democrats will make oblique reference to a more sweeping policy change: seizing a huge number of weapons from law-abiding citizens.”
Gun confiscation is not something that our society should be experimenting with. History has proven that when firearms are taken away from the people, it opens the door for a whole host of lawless atrocities, violence and chaos. Back in November of 1938, German newspapers warned that Jews were forbidden from owning any weapons, and that those who violated this law would be thrown into a concentration camp for up to 20 years.
Not wanting to be sentenced to prison, the Jews surrendered their firearms. Sadly, by the year 1942, millions of these unarmed Jews were being led to concentration camps and slaughtered in the most gruesome of ways. Of course, the Holocaust was a far more extreme event then what is currently taking place in Hawaii, but it goes to show that gun confiscation can have perilous consequences. It has no place in the United States of America, and it should be rejected by everyone.
