That’s the only way to explain why conservative columnist, author and pundit Ann Coulter would never be allowed on the campus of the University of California-Berkeley, to speak.
For the second time, the cowardly administrators at Berkeley have canceled a speech Coulter had been invited to give on the campus at the end of this month. The official reason is that administrators fear they can’t protect her after the modern-day equivalent of Hitler’s Brown Shirts threatened to violently oppose her venue. As reported by Breitbart News, which cited a report by Fox Business:
The conservative author caused waves across the college campus when her event was announced and received opposition from the UC Berkeley administration, which at one point banned Coulter, although this ban was later rolled back.
Law enforcement sources warned Fox News that there was a “99 percent chance” of violence on the campus of UC Berkeley if Coulter went ahead with her speech. The Young America’s Foundation group was also forced to pull their support of Coulter’s talk due to security concerns; the group blamed the college administration for allowing left-wing radicals to terrorize conservatives on campus.
There are several failures tied to this sordid, shameful episode in our nation’s history.
First, the Young America’s Foundation is correct in laying some of the blame on school administrators. It is disgraceful that on a campus where the modern-day campus free speech movement was born cannot even conjure up the fortitude to ensure that all can come there to speak freely, and without fear of being killed or severely injured.
But of course, even then the speech was far-Left.
Then there is the failure of the California state government, led by Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat and lifelong addict of public funds, having made his living off taxpayers for most of his life. If he really believed in truth, justice for all and the American way – not just the “California way” – he would do what a predecessor, Ronald Reagan, did in 1969: Declare a state of emergency and activate his state patrol and National Guard, deploying them to the very same campus where Reagan sent troops to make sure that Coulter a) can give her speech; and b) is protected while doing so.
In a post-event press conference, Reagan took the far-Left media to task when they attempted to blame him for the violence:
All of you who know better and are old enough to know better let young people think that they have the right to choose the laws which they would obey as long as they were doing it in the name of social protest.
Here’s a History.com clip of the incident and the exchange:

Reagan’s situation was exactly the same as what Brown and the cowards who run the University of California system, up to and including President Obama’s former Homeland Security chief, Janet Napolitano, now face: Pre-planned violence against a decision (in this case, allowing Coulter to speak) that some students, professors and their off-campus agitators don’t like, period. (Related: UC Berkeley Is A National Disgrace, Only A Matter Of Time Before Conservatives Begin Defending Themselves Against The Mindless Violence Of The Left.)
So far, however, no one in the lamestream media has bothered to call Gov. Brown’s office and ask him why on earth he would allow any invited speaker on any of California’s college campuses to be threatened or harmed just for exercising their First Amendment right?
A former Left-winger-turned-conservative author and pundit David Horowitz has leveled criticism at Napolitano. “They encourage this," Horowitz said of the protest. "Why weren't people arrested? I can't go to campuses without bodyguards,” he said, as Newsmax reported.
Ultimately, however, the buck stops on Brown’s desk. He has the overarching responsibility of ensuring that the state’s university system is open and safe for all who wish to attend and to speak there, if invited. That he is failing to step up proves once again that the Left is the tyrannical political ideology, not the Right, and worse, they justify it as necessary and proper.
Free speech is dead in California. Brown and his Brown Shirt thugs killed it.
