According to Dr. Cowan, the current epidemic of heart disease is worsened by many of the things people are told to do to prevent it. “People don’t know how to keep their cardiovascular system healthy,” notes Dr. Cowan, who maintains that eating a low-fat diet, as recommended by the American Heart Association, can actually worsen heart problems.
The ideal diet to prevent heart disease, Dr. Cowan says, is one high in natural fats but low in processed sugars and refined carbohydrates.
In the view of mainstream medicine, heart attacks - or myocardial infarctions - are caused by plaque buildups that cause blockages, and getting rid of the blockages is a priority. But Dr. Cowan points out that surgery, while it benefits very high-risk patients, only relieves symptoms such as chest pain, and doesn’t help prevent further heart attacks.
In reality: It is imbalances in the autonomic nervous system, as well as buildup of lactic acid in heart cells, that actually cause heart attacks, reveals Dr. Cowan. He recommends that the parasympathetic nervous system be “nourished” by such beneficial factors as contact with nature, loving relations and, of course, the best that nutrition has to offer.

In terms of a nutritional supplement tip, Dr. Cowan advises taking vitamin E - which he notes is the most potent lipid antioxidant in the human body. An ideal source for vitamin E is organic red palm oil.
Vitamin E is designed by nature to stop fats in the body from turning rancid and creating toxic free radicals, which cause aging and deterioration of tissues that can lead to disease. Vitamin E also reduces platelet aggregation - meaning it stops blood platelets from clumping together and forming clots, thereby preventing arterial plaque from rupturing.
It also improves the metabolism of heart cells, and stimulates the formation of new small blood vessels in the heart.
In addition, as far as a food fact, Dr. Cowan sees the commercial milling of wheat used in foods as an unhealthy development – since the germs of grains are rich in healthy fats and vitamin E. Vitamin E, which is always naturally found in plant and animal tissues that contain fats, is in the process of being “refined out” of foods by commercial processing - another reason to eat whole, unprocessed, heart-protective foods.
