The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015 (DGA) continues to lag behind current research, and the USDA and HHS continue to ignore the growing obesity and disease trends that some believe are indicative of poor nutrition advice given for decades.
If you’ve ever looked at the DGA from year to year, not much has changed in quite some time.
A new study in the British Medical Journal investigates the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC), and accuses them of ignoring current research and evidence.
The dietary guidelines have effectively suggested a diet free of full-fat dairy, meat and egg products, limited sweets and fats and limited saturated fat since their beginning in 1980. Science has long since proven that the carbohydrate heavy and fat free diet recommended is not necessarily the best, that eggs aren’t bad for you and that saturated fat may not be the ultimate cause of heart disease.
In fact, studies show Americans have only gotten fatter and fatter each year with the near-elimination of dietary fat in food. The journal also calls out the DGAC panel members for being “overly reliant” on studies by groups like the American Heart Association, who receive hefty financial support from Big Food and Big Pharma. One can guess that might be the British way of saying, “You’re all corrupt.”
