(NaturalNews) After extensive studies, the Autism Research Institute released statistics showing that 1 in 88 children in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder. Those numbers are startling, considering that autism is more common than childhood cancer, diabetes, Down's syndrome and muscular dystrophy.

While a single cause for this condition has yet to be discovered, the fact that genetics and environmental factors have a vital role in autism cannot be ignored.

Altering diet before conception

Research says that women who are pregnant or are looking to conceive a child should follow some recommendations to ensure the baby has a good start in life. For starters, any woman who is looking to conceive should allow her body at least a year to prepare for this life-altering event. The first major change that should be made is an improvement in diet. Diet is important when eating for two, and altering one's lifestyle can be done at any time.

It is advised to eat more greens, less sugary substances and at least 80 grams of pure protein daily. Avoid large fish that have high levels of mercury as well. That being said, dental fillings should be avoided while pregnant due to the mercury content. Also, drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day is advisable before, during and after pregnancy.

Exercise and diet alterations make a vast difference

The changes that are made before pregnancy should also be observed during pregnancy. For instance, a person needs to exercise regularly. Exercise not only keeps the oxygen levels rich in the blood but helps burn fat and keeps a person in shape. Another change that needs to be made is to completely reduce caffeine intake. While some women choose to completely remove this chemical from their diet, one cup of coffee or soda per day won't hurt anything. Reducing caffeine but adding folic acid and other prenatal vitamins is always advisable. Omegas-3's are great for any woman who is expecting, as in fish oil or popular krill oil.

It's about a lifestyle change

While diet and exercise are certainly important, everyday lifestyle changes are just as necessary. Removing harmful chemicals from the home, like cleaning supplies, and opting for green cleaners is important. Rather than using plastic water bottles which can emit toxins, opt for stainless steel bottles. While AC is nice at keeping the home cool, opening the window and allowing fresh air in does wonders for air quality. An air purification system is a great way to reduce harmful chemicals inside the home.

General health concerns

Vitamin D levels should be of concern to those wanting to avoid autism. If a person is deficient in vitamin D, they should take a supplement. While over the counter prescriptions seem to be harmless, they should not be taken while pregnant. Antibiotics and unnecessary medications should also be avoided. Even when a doctor prescribes the meds, be sure to question the absolute necessity of this prescription. The flu shot may or may not be a good choice and should be discussed with an obstetrician to find out if it should be taken.

During delivery and babies first months

When delivery occurs, make sure not to use drugs like Pitocin and other pain medications. Early cord clamping is also shown to cause increased risk. Since this condition's roots are shown in early brain development, a parent needs to watch their child's progress and look for signs of things that are not right. The earlier a child is diagnosed with autism, the better their prospects for life will be.
