The CO2 Bioreactor can be used at ethanol facilities to increase fuel production by 15 percent, and can also be applied to coal-fired power generation facilities to help produce more than 200 million additional gallons of renewable fuels a year for every 1,000 MW of electricity produced.
While traditional corn-derived ethanol produces roughly 450 gallons of fuel per acre, the CO2 Bioreactor can produce more than 200,000 gallons per acre while simultaneously reducing emissions into clean, renewable fuels.
The Bioreactor works by utilizing algae -- which is grown inside the bioreactor using solar power and nutrient-rich water -- to absorb CO2 emissions and turn them into oxygen. The algae is then harvested through clean, natural processes and collected for conversion into clean, profitable renewable fuels.
The reactor is compact and accommodates a wide variety of algae species, including those high in oil, starch or cellulose. The clean algae energy production reduces greenhouse gasses and also generates new sources of revenue.
"We believe that the resolution to many of the environmental challenges we face today can be found in the cost savings and increased profits that flow from consuming natural resources, such as coal or corn, more efficiently," said GS CleanTech president David Winsness. "We are very excited about our work with this technology."
