(NaturalNews) Someone has come up with a novel way of fighting the Zika virus in and around Miami: Take the "gun-free zone" approach.
That is, just put up signs 'guaranteeing' that Zika-carrying mosquitoes are not in certain areas
because they're not supposed to be, and that should do the trick – much like putting up "No Guns Allowed" signs are supposed to keep people safe by "preventing" armed ne'er-do-wells from entering places of business or worship or higher learning and committing
mass murder.
This week Gov. Rick Scott identified a 1.5-square mile zone where Zika-carrying
mosquitoes have been identified, marking the second such zone in the Miami-Dade County area. The first transmission zone, to so speak, was identified July 29 as a one-square-mile region in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami,
McClatchy Papers reported.
In conjunction with Florida's health department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has issued a warning targeting pregnant women specifically to avoid the areas of Miami Beach between 8th and 28th Streets, from Biscayne Bay to the Atlantic Ocean – in addition to the previously identified zone in Wynwood.
In the past several weeks five persons have contracted the virus from mosquitoes in and around Miami Beach. They include a pair of Miami-Dade residents and tourists from New York, Taiwan and Texas.
Since when has a 'declaration' kept someone safe?Any pregnant women who have visited the zones since mid-July have been advised to consult their doctors and to consider being tested for the virus, which the Florida health department is providing for free to all expectant mothers in the state.
Health officials say that as the virus spreads across Biscayne Bay from Wynwood, it will become tougher to contain the
Aedes aegypti species of mosquito that is most capable of carrying the disease.
In recent days, as the Zika virus continues to spread across parts of
Miami, state and federal health officials have declared certain "zones" in previously affected areas as clear, even though they have admitted they cannot conduct adequate aerial spraying because of the area's plethora of high-rise buildings. Spray planes fly at about 100 feet and that's just not possible in the Miami Beach area where the virus has been found.
Scott says some areas have been "cleared" of the virus-carrying mosquitoes, but the CDC is still advising pregnant women to avoid the area.
Hence, the notion of "Zika-Free Zone"
signs. Wouldn't that make much more sense?
Of course not – but there are far too many Americans who have that mentality, and nowhere is that more evident than in the gun control "debate."
As we
reported last year following a number of mass shootings, many on school and college campuses, the typical leftist response was to create more unarmed Americans and set up so-called gun-free zones.
'Feeling good' is not a good safety strategyOne of the biggest advocates was California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, who introduced a proposition for the fall election that would impose five major new
gun control restrictions on a state that already has some of the most restrictive anti-gun laws already.
What's more, state lawmakers doubled down on the stupidity of making it more difficult for law-abiding residents to defend themselves in June of this year, sending Gov. Jerry Brown
a raft of new gun control measures that came
in response to the December terrorist attack in San Bernardino, where two ISIS-inspired jihadists, a husband and wife team, killed 14 people and injured 21.
There is nothing more "feel-good" than "declaring" a "zone" of protection – from whatever danger might be lurking. Politicians do it all the time, and they pretend like making such a declaration is actually effective. That's what's most galling about such zones – they require the populace to suspend belief and ignore realities staring them in the face.
Zika-free zones, like gun-free zones, don't guarantee anything except failure.
