Bernie Sanders takes to Twitter advocating for GMO labeling while urging Congress to represent the PEOPLE, not just wealthy corporations

GMO labeling

(NaturalNews) For all the ways he's dead wrong about healthcare, education, and the replacing of our constitutional republic with democratic socialism, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders admittedly has two things going for him: his consistent rejection of globalist trade scams like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and his vehement support for states' rights when it comes to the proper labeling of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs).

In a series of "tweets" on Twitter, Sanders blasted the latest attempt by Monsanto and the food and chemical industries to supplant state-level legislation mandating GMO labeling. Commenting on the so-called Stabenow-Roberts bill, an adjunct to the infamous Monsanto "DARK" Act currently making its way through Congress, Sanders pushed his supporters to call their representatives and urge a NO vote on the legislation, which would effectively do the opposite of what its backers claim.

The New York Times is calling it "a big win for food companies, farm groups and the biotech industry," and for good reason. The Stabenow-Roberts bill, which is quietly making its way forward after a procedural vote in the Senate of 65-23, would not only rescind legitimate GMO labeling legislation like that already enacted in Vermont, but also make it easier for food manufacturers to hide GMOs in their products.

The Center for Food Safety (CFS), along with dozens of farm and consumer advocacy groups, recently sent a letter to Congress explaining why the Stabenow-Roberts bill is a disaster for food labeling transparency. Senate Bill 764, it explains, could end up exempting up to 99 percent of GMO ingredients from having to be labeled -- what good is that for advancing people's right to know?

Sanders agrees, having tweeted an infographic with the following warning:

"Monsanto is spending millions of dollars to overturn legislation passed by states that calls for the labeling of GMO food. Text GMO to 82623* to call your senators and ask them to oppose the Roberts-Stabenow GMO bill."

You can view that tweet here.

Sanders also tweeted one day prior that when families go to the grocery store to buy food for their families, they should know exactly what they're bringing home, which can only happen if states enact their own GMO labeling legislation. That tweet can be viewed here.

Call your representatives and tell the to vote NO on Stabenow-Roberts bill

Some members of Congress are insisting the S.764 is the best option we have in the midst of this ongoing debate over GMOs -- a compromise, if you will, that will still help to advance the cause of labeling transparency. But if you look a little closer at what the bill actually entails, you'll quickly see that the whole thing is a sham that benefits the food industry.

Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch (FWW), warns that, based on the wording of the Stabenow-Roberts bill, industry compliance with any sort of GMO labeling provisions (which are lacking to begin with) will be entirely voluntary because there are no provisions in the bill for punishing companies that fail to comply. The bill is nothing but a red herring meant to placate GMO labeling advocates who are growing weary of getting the shaft by their spineless representatives.

We can't let S.764 pass, which is why you need to call, text, fax -- and if you can, visit in person -- your representatives. Tell them you won't stand for any more federal intrusion into state laws that protect people rather than multinational corporations. We need real GMO labeling laws, not this pathetic excuse of a bill that will do absolutely nothing to stop unlabeled GMOs from further polluting our food supply.
