(NaturalNews) The gun control debate has been escalating again lately, particularly since the Paris shootings and recent incidents of violence in the United States, such as the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting and the San Bernardino mass shooting, with the latter claiming the lives of 14 people.
Somewhat understandably, many Americans have become convinced that stricter gun control measures would help to reduce the number of these types of attacks. It seems logical enough – at first glance – and the anti-gun rhetoric has become so pervasive that many who were undecided on the matter have now been swayed by the constant barrage of propaganda designed to reinforce the gun control agenda.
On the other side of the debate are those who realize that self-protection is a basic human right, and that firearms are a necessary means of keeping themselves and their families safe from armed attackers, whether they be violent criminals, terrorists or people with severe mental issues.
Self-defense: the first law of nature
Matt Agorist of
The Daily Sheeple wrote:
"As John Locke stated, self-defense is the first law of nature. Each person owns his or her own life and no other person has a right to take that life. Those who would attempt to stop you from defending yourself, are attacking the very right from which all other rights are derived – protection of one's own life."
The ones
pushing for gun control are either deliberately trying to disarm Americans in pursuit of another agenda – one that I won't address here – or they are operating under the mistaken belief that disarming ordinary law-abiding citizens will somehow make them safer. It is this second assumption that I'd like to address here.
The fact is that by disarming the citizenry, we create an environment in which armed criminals can operate freely. The fact that many of the deadly shootings in America in recent years have occurred in "gun-free zones" should be enough to illustrate that point.
Also, the fact that more and more law enforcement authorities are urging citizens to arm themselves is another compelling argument against stricter
gun control. The police know that citizens have a much better chance of deterring and surviving an armed attack if they themselves are armed.
Calling 911 won't help
The simple fact is that police officers are almost never able to arrive on the scene in time to stop a violent attack:
"Researchers found that less than 5 percent of all calls dispatched to
police are made quickly enough for officers to stop a crime or arrest a suspect. The 911 bottom line: 'cases in which 911 technology makes a substantial difference in the outcome of criminal events are extraordinarily rare.'"
And if that's not enough to convince you that firearms are often necessary for self-protection, then take a look at the following video, in which a machete-wielding man breaks down the door to a couple's apartment and then attempts to attack them:
YouTube.comIn the video, the victim of the attack sets up a video camera and begins filming after he hears a disturbance in the hallway. He locks his door to keep out his neighbor – a man suffering from a brain injury and a PTSD condition which triggers violent episodes.
If the victim in the attack had not had a firearm to protect himself with, it is very likely that he and his girlfriend would have ended up dead.
As has been said many times before, it would be nice to live in a society where arming oneself was not necessary, but that is simply not the case. The old adage, "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns," has never been more true than it is right now in America.
Let's preserve the
Second Amendment so that we can also preserve our lives and those of our families. It's one of our most fundamental and precious rights.
