(NaturalNews) For weeks there have been reports that terrorist organizations like the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (ISIS) would attempt to use the Middle East "
refugee crisis" as a way to infiltrate their operatives into Western countries including the United States. Now, the head of the House Homeland Security Committee has confirmed it.
Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, announced Dec. 7 during a speech at the National Defense University that, according to intelligence officials he did not name, Islamic extremists have indeed attempted to get into the U.S. through the
refugee resettlement program, which is managed by the Department of Health and Human Services. However, as McCaul noted, the Obama administration has yet to make that information public.
In addition to the disclosure, the Texas lawmaker and committee chairman said he was prepared to back "a slate of new bills" aimed at curbing jihadi attacks on American soil,
Breitbart News reported.
"ISIS members in Syria have attempted to exploit [the refugee program] to get into the United States," McCaul said in Washington, D.C. "The U.S. government has information to indicate that individuals tied to terrorist groups in Syria have already attempted to gain access to our country through the U.S. refugee program."
A separate report in
The Hill noted that McCaul "would not say specifically who informed him and other lawmakers about the revelation, only describing the sources as 'elements of the intelligence community.'"
"That was very courageous for them to come forward with this, to tell me about this personally, given the political debate on the Hill," he added, noting that he and the other lawmakers were briefed about the infiltration attempts earlier in the week.
'This is just the beginning'
"I believe the state of our homeland is increasingly not secure," warned McCaul."I believe 2015 will be seen as a watershed year in this long war — the year when our enemies gained an upper hand and when the spread of terror once again awoke the West."
McCaul said new legislation to end the influx of refugees from the war-torn Middle East for the time being will be introduced soon.
"This is just the beginning," McCaul vowed. "Over the coming weeks, we will introduce a slate of new bills based on the findings of the [bipartisan congressional] task force to keep terrorists from crossing our borders."
McCaul's revelation comes as a separate report claims that a newly released intelligence assessment commissioned by the White House
states unequivocally that ISIS has not been "contained," despite a recent claim by President Obama that they had been hemmed in by the U.S.-led coalition's air campaign and introduction of special forces.
They're coming
What's more, unnamed intelligence officials told
The Daily Beast, the report "predicts that the self-proclaimed
Islamic State will spread worldwide and grow in numbers, unless it suffers a significant loss of territory on the battlefield in Iraq and Syria" – a finding that hints at the introduction of ground forces as necessary to shrinking the terrorist organization's influence and reach, something Obama has been loathe to do.
The report not only contradicts Obama's "
ISIS is contained" narrative – which the president made just a day before the horrific ISIS-sponsored attacks in Paris, France, in which 130 people were killed – but "it's also a tacit admission that coalition efforts so far—dropping thousands of bombs and deploying 3,500 U.S. troops as well as other coalition trainers—have been outpaced by ISIS's ability to expand and attract new followers, even as the yearlong coalition air campaign has helped local forces drive ISIS out of parts of Iraq and Syria,"
The Daily Beast reported.
It wasn't clear if McCaul's revelations came from the same intelligence report as that commissioned by the White House.
The Homeland Security Committee chairman's admission was foreshadowed by earlier reports noting that South and Central American countries have been detaining mostly Syrian nationals who were attemptig to travel to the United States using fake passports they obtained in Greece. Thus far, authorities in both
Argentina and
Honduras have arrested Syrian "refugees" with fake Greek passports.
