(NaturalNews) He might have just turned 78 years old on June 1, but actor and celebrity activist Morgan Freeman isn't planning to fade away into retirement anytime soon. These days, the longtime cannabis advocate is busy maintaining his vast bee refuge in rural Mississippi, which he reportedly converted from a 124-acre ranch in an effort to combat the global crisis of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).

During a recent interview on The Jimmy Fallon Show, Freeman spoke stoically about how he mixes two parts sugar with one part water every day to feed his precious bees what they need to survive and thrive. He doesn't wear a protective suit when he does this, either -- Freeman says he "resonates" with the bees, which is why they don't ever try to attack or sting him.

Although the bit on Fallon's show was offered up in jest of Freeman's self-admitted "oneness" with his bees, cogent viewers were given the opportunity to take home a much more enlightening message.

Morgan Freeman adopts holistic approach to sustaining bees in his newly-converted refuge

During a recent media tour for his new film Lucy, Morgan went into further detail about why he's decided to raise bees. More than just a cursory hobby, Morgan recognizes that bee populations are in serious decline all over the world, and his deep love for nature spurred him to take action.

"There's a concerted effort to bring bees back onto the planet," he told KOMO News. "We do not realize that they are the foundation, I think, of the growth of the planet, the vegetation ... I have so many flowering things and I have a gardener, too. Because she takes care of the bees too, all she does is figure out, 'OK, what would they like to have?'"

"So we've got acres and acres of clover, we're planting stuff like lavender, I've got like, maybe 140 magnolia trees, big blossoms."

Part of Morgan Freeman's holistic approach to life includes using healing cannabis

Freeman also continues to be an outspoken supporter of cannabis, which he says he uses daily to manage chronic pain resulting from a near-deadly car accident he suffered seven years go. Rather than take dangerous pain meds, Freeman instead uses all-natural cannabis as his healing nutrient of choice, and he believes that all Americans should be free to do the same.

"Marijuana has many useful uses," he told The Daily Beast. "I have fibromyalgia pain in this arm, and the only thing that offers any relief is marijuana."

"They're talking about kids who have grand mal seizures, and they've discovered that marijuana eases that down to where these children can have a life. That right there, to me, says, 'Legalize it across the board!'"

Alcohol, on the other hand, has no real medicinal use, contends Freeman. One drink might be relaxing and generally harmless for some people, but two or three can be enough for many users of alcohol to end up out of their minds. Meanwhile, a few tokes or bites of a marijuana "edible" produce a sense of calmness, contentedness, and focus without producing harmful side effects or a hangover.

"This movement is really a long time coming, and it's getting legs -- longer legs," he added.
