(NaturalNews) An IUD or an Intra-uterine device is a very small T-shaped polyethylene device that is wrapped either in copper, the ParaGard or the Mirena that contains hormones both of which prevent pregnancy. The IUD is inserted by a doctor directly into the uterus usually without sedation or anesthesia. The patient may feel intense cramping, nausea or dizziness while the IUD is being inserted.

How does the copper IUD work?

The ParaGard Copper IUD works by preventing the sperm from reaching and fertilizing the egg and therefore preventing pregnancy from occurring. Copper is released into the uterus, which acts as a spermicidal and is toxic to cells. The IUD is 99.8 percent effective against pregnancy. The benefits of the IUD is that it is a birth control that does not release any hormones, that does not need to be taken everyday and it is a long-term contraception effective for 10 years.

The side-effects

• Heavier periods
• Increase in menstrual cramps
• Discomfort during intercourse
• Extended PMS
• Weight gain
• Acne
• Depression
• Insomnia
• Spaciness
• Headaches
• Panic attacks
• Racing heart
• Inability to concentrate
• Hip pain
• Breast tenderness

Copper toxicity and the ParaGard IUD

The copper IUD is an attractive birth control option for many as it is one of the only non-hormonal birth control options available and it does not have to be taken daily. While copper is an essential element needed by all the tissues in the body, in excess it can result in many problems. Although western medicine claims that copper exposure from an IUD is not toxic, there have been many accounts of negative side effects from the copper IUD that have been linked to excess copper. If a body receives more copper that it can handle, especially when zinc is not supplemented, a woman can experience significant side effects. Increased copper levels are especially detrimental to women because of natural estrogen. Estrogen facilitates the retention of copper which leads to the symptoms listed above. So those who thought that getting the ParaGard was a good choice because of it being a "hormone free" birth control have really just created a contradiction for.
