In this photo, did you notice the two metal plates on either side of the front wheel? These are the charging plates. When Roomba docks with the charger, these plates carry electricity to charge the internal NiMH battery. This is what allows Roomba to auto-charge and not require plugging in a charging cable of any kind (which is a relief compared to the earlier Roomba models which required such intervention).

Also notice that the front wheel has an alternating black / white pattern. When Roomba is successfully moving, this alternating pattern is detected by an internal optical sensor that tells the on-board computer that Roomba is moving forward. If this pattern stops, but the back wheels are still turning, it tells Roomba that it's stuck and needs to try to back its way out of the situation or try something different.

This is what's responsible for Roomba's exceptional navigational abilities. Not only does it manage not to get tangled up most of the time, it's also very good at getting out of tangles so that it can continue to vacuum your home without interruption.

One more thing worth noting here is the optical sensors just under the front bumper. This prevents Roomba from rolling off the top of a flight of stairs. When a ledge is detected, Roomba will turn around and go the other way. It's sort of a self-defense mechanism that also keeps customers happy (I think if Roomba just rolled off the top of a flight of stairs, the return rate on this product would be astonomical...)
