Pentagon Official Admits U.S. Engaged in Torture of Guantanamo Bay PrisonerBy Mike Adams, January 16, 2009 | Key concepts: Guantanamo Bay, Torture and Bush Administration It's official: Top Bush Administration military personnel are now international war criminals. That's the upshot of an admission by senior Pentagon official Susan Crawford who has gone on the record today, admitting that the U.S. military engaged in the torture of at least one captive at Guantanamo Bay (and common sense tells you it wasn't limited to just one). The game now shifts from whether or not the U.S. committed torture to how fast President Bush can sign pardons for all the U.S. war criminals before he leaves office. Spare ink and pens are apparently being airlifted to Washington this weekend by concerned military officials. But here's the hilarious part: Presidential pardons only apply in the United States, not in other countries. So pardoned Bush Administration officials could in fact be arrested and tried for war crimes if they dare travel abroad. Technically speaking, that puts the United States of America in the position of "harboring international war criminals," which is precisely the same thing the U.S. has accused Iraq and Afghanistan of doing (among other countries). Looks like half the senior officials in the Bush Administration might as well just turn in their passports right now. If they want to stay out of prison, they'll have to remain within the borders of the U.S., where they've been granted legal immunity by the very same administration that illegally approved the use of torture in the first place. (Might makes right, huh?) The real question, though, is this: Can Bush pardon himself? And if not, then isn't it about time we brought him up on charges for his own role in these war crimes? By the way, this isn't simply an anti-Bush commentary. All Presidents from the last several administrations have committed war crimes, including Bill Clinton who dropped bombs on a pharmaceutical factory in the Sudan to distract the media from the Monica Lewinsky story (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Shi...). The last President who didn't commit or authorize war crimes was probably Jimmy Carter, and I'm sure someone will come up with an example that challenges even the Carter Administration on war crimes.
