FDA Warns Coca-Cola Over Nutrient Claims in Diet Coke

The FDA has issued a warning to Coca-Cola, accusing it is "mislabeling" its Diet Coke Plus product, which adds a tiny amount of vitamins and minerals to an otherwise "junk" soda drink.
According to the FDA, the use of the word "plus" on a product label requires that the product contain at least ten percent more nutrients than a typical product in the same category. Since Diet Coke Plus doesn't, it is therefore mislabeled, they say.
The FDA also says that adding nutrients to a junk soda product and claiming it is somehow nutritious through the use of the word "plus" is misleading and inappropriate in the first place. I happen to agree with that assessment. Diet Coke is absolutely loaded with phosphoric acid, which greatly increases the acidity of the body and, when consumed in large enough quantities, may contribute directly to loss of bone mineral density. In addition, Diet Coke Plus is still sweetened with aspartame, the industry's favorite chemical sweetener.
