Krill Harvesting May Threaten Food Source of Whales and Penguins

The ongoing harvesting of krill for human consumption as nutritional supplements may be threatening the food source of seals, penguins and whales, warn environmental experts.
An article published by the Times Online warns about the gaps in knowledge surrounding krill harvesting. "Krill is the basis of the Antarctic food web, on which fish, seals, penguins and whales all rely," said Willie Mackenzie of Greenpeace.
The omega-3 fatty acids from krill are among the highest-grade sources of omega-3s in the nutritional supplements industry, but the rising popularity of omega-3s has brought more scrutiny to the source of those fatty acids and raises questions about whether their harvesting is sustainable.
Krill are essentially wildcrafted out of the ocean, meaning they are taken from the water without being replenished. Because they are such an important food source for many advanced forms of aquatic life, the long-term effects of constantly removing krill from the ocean is entirely unknown.
Thus, the industry is engaged in an experiment that runs the risk of depleting krill populations in local areas, threatening the sustainability of penguins, whales, seals and other aquatic animals.
