Stevia to be Outlawed? FDA Urged to Declare Stevia a "Drug" and Ban Its Sale

A two-man law firm in Washington DC has filed a petition with the FDA that claims stevia is an "unapproved drug" and should be immediately banned from sale in the United States. This effort is no doubt funded by the chemical sweetener industry (aspartame, etc.) but there's no telling how the illogical FDA will decide on this issue. On what basis is it claimed stevia is a drug? Simply because it might have health benefits, the petition says. Anything that's good for you can be categorized as a drug by the FDA, didn't you know?
From Foodnavigator-usa.com: The petition focuses on § 301(ll) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), and was made on the grounds that SGs have been studied for therapeutic uses, such as effects on blood pressure and blood sugar levels, with clinical trials supporting these therapeutic uses.... more
