(NaturalNews) As Natural News readers are aware, fewer and fewer corporations are controlling more and more of our daily lives. A shrinking number of companies own virtually all of the mainstream media.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, just a few corporations like Monsanto and Syngenta control a growing portion of our food supply, and worse, feel like they have to alter it while bathing crops in dangerous chemical pesticides.

"And, how far does food travel from a field, sea or factory - to your plate? Why do we think that this is a sustainable practice?" says a post on YouTube introducing a provocative new investigative series, "The Oil Alarm," By Liam Scheff, which examines the relationship between Big Oil, Big Food and the interactions between both that are detrimental to the people.

The video begins with some statistics – namely, that for 200,000 years humans existed via hunting and gathering food, expending one calorie of energy to bring back 10 calories of nourishment.

"Ten for one – that was a good return on investment," the video states.

But today that equation is reversed; we spend 10 calories of oil and gas to produce one calorie of food. Consider:

"Tomatoes grown in Italy are processed and put into bags from the Netherlands, shipped to Sweden, processed into ketchup, and poured into bottles made of plastics from five countries. Fish caught in Scotland are frozen, shipped to China, thawed, deboned, refrozen, and shipped back. Sugarcane picked in Hawaii is refined, shipped to San Francisco, refined again, then shipped to New York, where it is packaged, before being shipped back to Hawaii and the rest of the world."

The video goes on to note that most of the U.S. agricultural food supply comes from water-starved California, where it is shipped and flown to the rest of the country. And so on.

Some marvel at this amazingly complex, yet functional, logistical chain. But as Scheff notes, such processes have an outsized effect, not only on the world's resources, but on the planet and on the food supply themselves. Worse, this logistical chain is controlled by massive companies that don't often have citizens' best interests in mind when they make decisions.

"Companies like Monsanto now control the worldwide food supply," the video narrator states. "They're altering seeds, soaking them in pesticides, and changing their genetic structure."
