(NaturalNews) The phrase "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about" is now meaningless to most Americans as they see the true nature and purpose of our police thanks to the widespread use of camera phones and social media.
Shona Banda, a woman living in Kansas, found that her dollars paid for a half dozen police officers in her yard without a warrant who refused to allow her entry into her own home. Why? Her son argued in favor of marijuana at an anti-drug presentation at school and the police suspected her of drug possession.
The Odds Are Never In Our Favor
When they entered the home, the police found 2 oz of cannabis oil that Banda uses to treat her Crohn's Disease. While marijuana is legal in Colorado where Banda is from, Kansas strictly outlaws marijuana. At this point in the story, variations of "she broke the law, she deserves it," are bound to begin. But who was breaking the law when police officers refused to allow her into her own home until their hastily procured warrant materialized?
Watching multiple officers violate the law and people's personal rights doesn't leave me pleased with their ability to do their jobs or secure my safety. It makes me angry because they
are doing something wrong. They and too many Americans don't think the police have something to worry about. If the people who are ostensibly tasked with upholding the law don't feel anything when they break it, the system isn't working.
What Are Police Here For?
Both police and the people they are serving would agree that solving and managing violent crimes is one of the primary jobs of the police. The biggest issue comes when trying to figure out which
police duties should be next in importance. Unfortunately, the police force chooses to pair its focus on violent crime with generating revenue. Retired police officers have confirmed what we are all coming to suspect is the other side of the police force - collecting money from tickets and forcing people into the revenue system, whether it be through court fees, prison dollars, or child protective services.
Getting Caught in the System
Whether or not Shona Banda deserves to have custody of her son taken away or to face criminal charges because she uses marijuana oil for medicinal purposes is not the issue. None of that matters anymore, because she is now in a cycle of paying for court appearances, fighting a system that doesn't care what happens as long as the money continues to roll in.
The entire justice system is stacked against anyone who doesn't have the money for the merry-go-round that is built into the system. Because of our flawed system, half a dozen police officers and social workers were able to waste taxpayer dollars and time that could be better spent elsewhere. Banda's biggest problem is the fact that she's an easy target for the revenue collectors. She doesn't deserve to have her life turned upside down because she taught her son to speak for himself and voice his beliefs.
