(NaturalNews) President Obama has decided not to heed the call from tens of millions of Americans to take bold action in dealing with the Ebola outbreak in the United States. Instead, he took
political action, which is par for the course for this president in dealing with the deadly virus.
Obama has named an "Ebola czar" -- Ron Klain -- whose job is to "oversee the administration's Ebola response," according to
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). Only, Klain has no medical experience or expertise whatsoever. His "claim to fame" is that he is a former chief of staff to vice presidents Joe Biden and Al Gore. So, he's a political hack, in other words.
It's no wonder
Americans have little faith in government these days.
Political appointmentSo, what is Klain's responsibility? According to WSJ and other publications, he will be leading the administration's Ebola response "across a variety of government agencies." Included will be "greater efforts to detect, isolate and treat Ebola patients in the U.S." WSJ reported further:
The move is the latest attempt by Mr. Obama to confront growing criticism of the government's response since a Liberian man, Thomas Eric Duncan, arrived in Dallas where he was diagnosed with Ebola and died late last month. Two of his nurses at a Dallas hospital were infected with the virus in the course of his treatment.Klain, 53, was named following rising concerns that the virus could continue to spread after one of the nurses, Amber Joy Vinson, 29, took commercial flights to and from Cleveland to visit family. Before her return trip to Dallas, she contacted the CDC officials to inform them who she was and that she had a fever of 99.5° F but was incredibly allowed to fly anyway because her temperature had not reached the CDC-imposed
Ebola fever level of 100.4° F.
Since then, another healthcare worker from the same facility -- Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital -- has entered self-isolation aboard a Carnival Cruise Lines ship that left Galveston Oct. 12. According to reports, the female
health worker is a lab supervisor and has not yet exhibited any symptoms. Also, reports say she is being monitored by the ship's doctor and does not present any risk to the passengers and crew.
"We are working with the cruise line to safely bring them back to the United States out of an abundance of caution," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
In another action that is not designed to actually prevent the virus from getting into the U.S. once again from the West African nations where Ebola is currently raging,
Obama signed an executive order that authorized deployment of National Guard and other reserve military forces to the continent, as part of ongoing U.S. efforts to battle the disease in place.
'Not qualified'And the president said he is
open to the idea of banning flights to the U.S. from those countries -- Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone -- as lawmakers from both parties and a majority of Americans want him to do, but he hasn't issued that order yet.
As for Klain, a number of people have openly questioned his selection as
Ebola czar, given his notable dearth of experience with deadly infectious diseases. As WSJ reported:
GOP Rep. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in a tight race, said in a statement that Mr. Klain's appointment makes it "clear that the president sees Ebola as a political crisis and not a health crisis. As a doctor who has worked in public health programs in the U.S. and hospitals in Africa, we need someone with extensive health-care experience in dealing with this public health crisis. Being Joe Biden and Al Gore's chief of staff does not qualify him for this position."Most Democrats, of course, are applauding the decision.
