On October 10, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Liberia detailed a long list of needs over the next six months that remain unmet. In fact, the ministry projects that health officials will need at least 84,841 body bags over the next six months. With less than 5,000 currently on hand, the agency says the nation will need an additional 79,940 to be stocked for preparations lasting until next March.

The scope of horrors in Liberia surface

To give an example of the speed and scope of the Ebola pandemic in Liberia, here's some treatment numbers from Liberia's Ministry of Health and Social Welfare: There were 56 new cases in isolation on October 10, with a total of 452 patients currently in treatment. On that day, only 35 were discharged from treatment.

Up until October 10, there have been 206 cumulative cases of Ebola in healthcare workers. On that day, there were four new cases affecting healthcare workers. So far, 93 of them have passed away in 2014.

On October 10 alone, the ministry reported 196 new Ebola contacts -- people who have could have been exposed to Ebola -- nationwide in Liberia. The counties with the highest number of contacts are Montserrado (164 new cases), Bong County (17) and Lofa (12). Nationally, the ministry has 16,989 contacts listed, with 7,055 under follow-up.

The case fatality rate is staggering in Liberia; 65.1 percent of all Ebola cases end in death there, based on the Ministry's report. On October 10, 25 new deaths were confirmed, for a total of 2,414.

As the disease multiplies at the current rate, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Liberia believes that health authorities will be coming up short with supplies. They have charted specific needs going forward in the next six months. These needs include the following: 79,940 more body bags, 98,271 units of chlorine powder, 2.36 million examination gloves, over 500,000 goggles, 174,000 rubber boots and 3,232 mattresses. They will additionally need nearly 600,000 heavy duty plastic gloves, over 200,000 hand sprayers, 140,413 buckets and almost a million fully hooded protection suits. The ministry expects the pandemic to get worse.
