(NaturalNews) A company in Delaware has recalled more than a dozen varieties of cheese after some of them were linked to a death in California, as well as sickness in newborn children.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the 16 cheeses, which were made by Roos Foods of Kenton, Del., have been tied to a
Listeria outbreak. The recalled brands include Mexicana, Amigo, Santa Rosa de Lima and Anita.
"These cheeses were packaged in various sized clear plastic wrapped Styrofoam trays, clear plastic wrapped, clear plastic vacuum package, and clear rigid plastic containers," the CDC said in an alert posted on the agency's website.
Especially dangerous to pregnant womenThe products were distributed in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. The agency said there has been one reported death in California and seven illnesses reported thus far in Maryland. All of the victims there reported eating the tainted cheese.
Besides the cheese products, Roos Foods is also recalling some of its sour cream and butter products: Santa Rosade Lima, Crema Pura Mexicana, La Chapina Crema and Amigo.
"These sour creams were packaged in various sized white plastic tubs, clear plastic bags, clear plastic pouches, and clear plastic jars. The recalled products were distributed through retail stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and the District of Columbia," the CDC said.
Listeriosis is a serious infection primarily caused by eating foods tainted with the bacterium
Listeria monocytogenes. "The disease primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems," the agency says on its "
Listeria" page. It is particularly dangerous to pregnant women, because it passes easily to the fetus.
