(NaturalNews) A middle school in the Kansas City suburb of Shawnee is under fire after a parent of one of its students caught wind of a controversial sex education module being taught to 13-year-olds. According to
Fox 4 News, a poster affixed to a classroom door at Hocker Grove Middle School contained descriptions of some of the lewd sex acts being taught to younger students, which included things like "anal sex" and "touching each other's genitals."
Mark Ellis told reporters that his daughter snapped a photo on her mobile phone of the questionable poster and showed it to her dad, who says he initially thought it was a student prank. But after phoning school administrators to inquire about it, Ellis says he was shocked to learn that the poster was deliberately put up by teachers as "teaching material" for the school's "Making a Difference" curriculum.
"Why would you put it in front of 13-year-old students?" asked Ellis about the poster in disgust. In his personal view, the topics discussed on the poster have nothing to do with legitimate sex education, especially one that, by law, is supposed to emphasize abstinence as the best method to avoid pregnancy or the transmission of disease.
"It upsets me," Ellis is quoted as saying to
Fox 4 News. "And again, it goes back to who approved this? You know this had to pass through enough hands that someone should have said, 'Wait a minute, these are 13-year-old kids, we do not need to be this in-depth with this sexual education type of program.'"
But the
school disagrees. Spokeswoman Leigh Anne Neal, who represents the district in which Hocker Grove is located, told the media that the poster has been perceived completely out of context. In her view, issues like "sexual fantasy" and "grinding" are important things that need to be discussed with barely-teenagers by public school educators.
"The curriculum... aligns with national standards around those topics, and it's part of our curriculum in the school district," Neal emphasized to
Fox 4 News. "[T]he item is meant to be part of a lesson, and so certainly as a standalone poster without the context of a teacher led discussion, I could see that there might be some cause for concern."
HHS pushing lewd sex act curriculum as 'pregnancy prevention intervention'
In added defense of the curriculum, Neal told reporters that it is officially recommended as appropriate teaching material by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which advises its use as a "pregnancy prevention intervention." According to the material's publisher, the goal of the material is to "empower" young adolescents.
But Module 2 of the program, which is what was being referenced by the obscene poster, is exceedingly frank in the way that it addresses specific expressions of sexuality. Ellis believes that this material is highly inappropriate for students who are around his daughter's age, and he is hoping that school administrators will rethink their use of the material. If they do not, Ellis says he will pull his daughter out of the
sex education classes entirely.
"This has nothing to do with abstinence or sexual reproduction -- actually, a lot of these things," he adds. "I would like to see that this particular portion of the curriculum is removed from the school."
