Natural Skin Care Provides Breakthrough in Treatment for Eczema

(NewsTarget) Eczema is a problem that up to one third of Americans suffer from on a daily basis. Annually it is estimated that over 28 billion dollars is spent on health care for eczema and other skin disorders. However, a new study has shown that utilizing a shielding lotion can help minimize the pain and difficulties of eczema sufferers. (1) Use of a natural shielding lotion in many cases reduces the need for using steroids such as cortisone.

Eczema or atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition that is described as "an itchy eruption of the skin" that is sometimes "accompanied by asthma or hay fever." Eczema may be caused by "a malfunction in the body's immune system" although the true cause has yet to be determined. Many times eczema begins in childhood and continues to be a problem the entire lifetime of the patient. Exposure to irritants and allowing the skin to become dry can exasperate the symptoms of eczema. (2)

A new study published by both the Society for Investigative Dermatology and the American Academy of Dermatology Association was conducted by The Lewin Group which highlights a breakthrough in protecting the skin of patients that suffer from eczema and other skin disorders through the use of shielding lotions. Dr. Benest a dermatologist and expert on treating skin disorders such as eczema had the following to say about the leading causes of skin irritation: "...[E]xposure to irritants and chemicals in the everyday environment. We live in a much more toxic environment today and our skin bears the brunt. When we are exposed to harsh conditions in the environment it can have a very negative effect on our skin." Dr. Benest went on to say this about the benefits of utilizing shielding lotions: "The reason shielding lotions are so effective is that they replace the protective barrier and allow the skin to heal from within. A shielding lotion bonds with the outer layer of the skin and protects it from outside irritants and chemicals, so it will prevent skin conditions from developing or it will help an existing condition to heal." Shielding lotions form a protective barrier between the skin and the outside world which is full of irritants and chemicals while keeping in the natural moisture and oils which help the skin to heal. The biggest difference between shielding lotions and traditional moisturizing lotions is that shielding lotions allow the body to enhance the skins own natural ability to protect itself from the harmful things in the environment today. (3) There are shielding creams which are natural that can be used; and of course, these would be the best choices.
