(NaturalNews) A well-planned nursery environment can significantly improve a baby's health, according to Steven Hong of Sylvane Inc.
Sylvane is an indoor health company that sells products such as air and water purifiers, allergy bedding, humidifiers and dehumidifiers, full spectrum lights, heaters, portable air conditioners, steam cleaners and vacuums.
According to Hong, babies are very sensitive to substances that might act only as minor irritants in adults. Taking proper care of the nursery environment, however, can assure that babies are comfortable and healthy.
"When parents create a comfortable environment in the nursery, they're not only helping to ensure the health and well-being of their babies, but in turn might just allow themselves a bit more shuteye as well," Hong said.
Hong advises that nurseries be painted well ahead of time, so that no lingering fumes remain to cause eye irritation, lung irritation or nausea once the baby is born. If painting cannot be completed far enough in advance, Hong said, babies should sleep in a different room until the new paint has finished off-gassing.
New furniture, carpeting and plastics can also release pollutants that irritate a child's lungs, Hong said. An air purifier can remove these, along with allergens such as mold and dust.
Allergy-causing dust mites can also be removed by thoroughly cleaning a baby's bedding at least once a week. A humidifier or dehumidifier can keep air from getting too humid, which encourages the growth of mold, or too dry, which causes dry skin and sore throats.
Pets can also place children at risk of allergies, as well as potentially exposing them to ticks and fleas. For this reason, Hong advises that all pets be kept out of the nursery.
Hong also noted that like bedding, floors should be thoroughly cleaned once per week, as
babies tend to spend large amounts of time on the floor, putting new objects into their mouths.
