Racist university enrollment system forces Indian man to pretend to be black to gain acceptance
by J. D. Heyes
(NaturalNews) The Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, one of two proposed and ratified in the immediate post-Civil War period (1868), deals primarily with ensuring due process and equal protection under the laws of the United States.
Since its ratification, the amendment has been cited in a number of high-profile, and controversial, Supreme Court cases, including Brown v. Board of Education (racial discrimination); Roe v. Wade (the reproductive rights ruling that legalized abortion in all 50 states); Bush v. Gore (2000 presidential election recount); and University of California v. Bakke, which found that basing school admissions on race was an acceptable form of achieving "diversity" in the school student population.
The progressive Left has cheered the latter use of the Fourteenth Amendment often, as have racial minorities. But a recent reliance on the precedent has sent some liberals into a tizzy, which seems more than just a little hypocritical.
Taking advantage of "positive affirmative action"
As reported by Britain's Telegraph newspaper in recent weeks, Vijay Chokalingam, brother of actress Mindy Kaling of The Mindy Project (her real name is Vera Mindy Chokalingam), has penned a new book regarding his experiences posing as a black man, notably in order to take advantage of "positive discrimination policies" that he believes allowed him to get into medical school at St. Louis University, in the Missouri city of the same name.
As The Telegraph reported:
The book, titled Almost Black, will describe how, between 1998 and 1999, its author, an Indian American, "shaved my head, trimmed my long Indian eyelashes, and applied to medical school as a black man".
He says he was motivated to commit racial fraud in large part because of his grade point average; it was a relatively low 3.1, and most med schools require a higher average -- at least from students of certain racial and ethnic groups, Chokalingam believed.
He further calculated that U.S. universities were positively discriminating in favor of African American applicants; as such, he decided to test his hypothesis by assuming an African American identity.
In addition to altering his physical features, Chokalingam also applied to medical schools using his middle name -- Jojo; he says his parents were inspired to name him that after U.S. NBA star Jo Jo White, also African American). He also emphasized the fact that he spent time in Nigeria as a child during school interviews.
"Posing as black was the only way I felt I could get into medical school"
As he noted on his website, Chokalingam -- as a "black" candidate with a 3.1 GPA -- was considered for admission by Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University in New York, before he was finally accepted by SLU (he eventually dropped out, having failed Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, according to his website). Now, he works as a resume writer (ironically) and a graduate school application consultant. He has said repeatedly that he only lied about his race -- nothing else. All the other details on his applications were correct, he maintains.
After opening up about his chicanery, Chokalingam said his more-famous sister did not approve of what he had done.
As reported by the Daily Mail:
On his blog, Almost Black, Vijay Chokal-Ingam said that none of his family approves of his book, in which he'll controversially claimed he was only accepted into medical school in the late 1990s because he posed as a black man.
The act was bad, not the policy?
"My sister Mindy Kaling (Vera Mindy Chokalingam)... strongly disapproves of my book," he wrote. "She actually said, 'This book will bring shame on our family.' The rest of my family does not agree with the book. Still, they respect my right to make my own decisions with my career."
Some liberal progressives are outraged, but it serves them right because it is a system they have held up as "necessary" and "fair" in order to allegedly "make up for decades of racism" by whites.
But the thing is, by their very nature, pro-any race "affirmative action" programs are inherently racist because they put all other ethnic groups at an immediate disadvantage -- which is precisely what the Fourteenth Amendment was intended to prevent.
Interesting, though, is how sister Mindy has criticized her brother's actions, not the affirmative action policy itself.
