America's descent into social chaos: California mob attacks homeless man over false Facebook post as mass hysteria grips the nation

by J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) It is hard to imagine a time since the turbulent 1960s when America has seemed so near the breaking point. Examples of our collective anguish are everywhere, and there is fear rising in some quarters of society that if we don't get a handle on our collective anxieties, fears and loathing, our divisions will continue to deepen and lead to a total unraveling of our social fabric.

One of the most recent cases in point comes from Modesto, California, where a fake warning on Facebook of a man trying to attack women in the city went viral. Not only was the post false, police say, but the man to whom the post referred wound up becoming the victim of a crazed mob.

Police said the post included details of the man – his description and, more importantly, where he could be found. It didn't take long, cops said, before a group of men took the law into their own hands.

As reported by CBS Sacramento:

The post warns in all caps of a Modesto man trying to break into homes and assault women, urging people to share to save a woman's life.

"The whole area was in a panic, and my boyfriend was like, no you have to drive to work, and I'll pick you up," resident Hope Davis told the affiliate.

Modesto Police spokeswoman Heather Graves says the department was flooded with calls, but they had no reports of a man trying to physically harm anyone.

The department attempted to calm the community, sending out a message via Twitter, "This post is false. Please share. We fear this man may become a victim."

Hate rules

They also told the author to take her original post down. Nevertheless, later in the evening on the day the post went viral, a group of men hunted down the man in question and beat him.

There are other examples, too, of how Americans are allowing their intolerance and anger take over their emotions and thought processes.

Agitators in New York City recently planned an event that featured the burning of an American flag – and on July 4, the day we declared independence from Great Britain. What's more, they are using an isolated incident – the Dylann Roof shootings in Charleston, S.C. – as their "justification" to hate further.

"We cannot ignore the roots of Dylan [sic] Roof's savagery in America's long history of institutionalized racism and murderous violence against black people. The Confederate flag, which Dylan Roof proudly displayed, is a lasting symbol of slavery, segregation, and the racist exploitation that still dominates our society. Dylan Roof isn't an isolated actor — he is a product of a consistent pattern of state-sponsored terrorism and racialized dehumanization in America," the group said on its Facebook page on June 25.

It doesn't matter, obviously, that the actions of Roof, who is white, in killing nine African American worshippers at a historically black church, actually is an isolated incident and that he, by far, does not represent the majority (or even a large minority) of whites. Hate rules.

The compact is unwinding and there are those making sure it happens

Meanwhile, in Macon, Georgia, in recent days, a mob estimated to number about 40-50 people ransacked a Walmart store in the wee hours of the morning, causing at least $2,000 in damage – just because.

Floors in parts of the store were "coated with broken merchandise," a sheriff's department report noted. "The length of the store from front to rear was lined with items which had been shattered, destroyed, turned over and thrown about."

At about 1:50 a.m., the group charged into the store's main aisle, smashing and breaking merchandise and display cases. A young black teen seen leading the horde who was arrested when he returned to the store to retrieve his cell phone told one Walmart employee during the melee that the event was planned, and just to see how much damage could be done.

In Columbia, S.C., the state capital, a brawl broke out last month when a group of people who showed up to demonstrate their support for the right to display the Confederate flag were physically attacked by a separate group of "tolerant" progressives there to protest the flag.

Couple these incidents with recent violence in Baltimore, Ferguson, MO., New York City and elsewhere, and you can clearly see a pattern developing.

Democracy depends on a civil society, and a society is civil when there is law and order and its people truly tolerate opposing points of view. The compact is unwinding, and what's more, there are forces committed to seeing it unwind.
