Trojan Horse trade policy provides loophole for banned GMOs to enter Europe
by Jonathan Benson, staff writer
(NaturalNews) Even though the biotech moguls have attained near-total control over the conventional U.S. food supply, they're not content with this monopolistic feat. A new trade agreement being proposed with the European Union seeks to dump more American food exports into Europe, a move that will require European food safety standards, which are among the most rigorous in the world, to be drastically lowered.
Unlike the American food supply, which is riddled with toxic pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and other health-destroying chemicals, European food is still largely clean. This is because many European countries have maintained a strong legacy of conscientious objection to all the "better living through chemicals" propaganda that, unfortunately, has taken hold throughout much of North America over the past several decades.
But if U.S. interests get their way, Europe will eventually be forced to lower its standards in order to allow for more GM corn and soy animal feed to be imported into the country, and potentially much more. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP, would essentially force Europe to abolish its longstanding precautionary principle approach to untested crop and food technologies such as GMOs, and embrace whatever countries like the U.S. are throwing at them. You can help stop this Trojan Horse trade deal by signing the petition here!
"If concluded TTIP will likely reflect a compromise between the US and EU," explains the group Stop TTIP. "The US government's TTIP goal is to... 'help U.S. agricultural sales reach their full potential.' This is to be achieved with tools such as 'mutual recognition' and 'regulatory co-operation.'"
Precautionary principle has protected Europe against GMO onslaught
The precautionary principle, in case you're unaware, maintains that, if a product or substance is even suspected of causing harm, it can be preemptively banned, even without extensive scientific knowledge proving that said product or substance is definitely dangerous. By applying this approach, a country can avoid being taken advantage of by greedy private interests like those that have forced GMOs and related chemicals on the American public without proper scientific testing or mandatory labeling.
In the case of GMOs, there does exist substantial evidence to suggest that transgenic substances are dangerous for humans and for the environment. The only studies to suggest otherwise are those funded by the biotech industry, which has every incentive to lie about product safety and effectiveness in order to reap huge profits.
For Europe, the precautionary principle has been the anchor mooring the continent's agricultural legacy to solid ground amidst a constantly shifting sea of change and "innovation." Europeans have done a pretty good job staving off the biotech parasites attempting to hijack their food supply, and they aren't about to let some covert trade agreement with the U.S. destroy that.
"If food & farming multinationals get their way then this will not only lead to lower food & farming standards but to more factory farms and monopolies," adds Stop-TTIP.com. "Their prices and increased lobby power will undermine farmers who produce good & healthy food."
Sign petition to stop TTIP and protect integrity of Europe's food supply
Stop-TTIP.com has created a petition entitled the "European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) against TTIP and CETA" to fight both TTIP and its Canadian counterpart, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, or CETA. You can sign the petition, which already contains over 1.6 million signatures as of this writing, to help protect the integrity of Europe's food supply and slow the spread of biotechnology corporations' influence:

"Agribusiness lobbies such as the pesticide industry have strongly pushed their agenda via the TTIP negotiations with the aim of undermining current EU food regulations," said Nina Holland, an agribusiness campaigner with the public interest group Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO).
