8 habits that have hijacked your hormones

by Derek Henry

(NaturalNews) Hormone dysfunction is a very common concern and is becoming so problematic that hormonal cancer and disease are becoming commonplace in our society. Whether it is breast cancer, prostate cancer, or hypothyroidism, there are some very distinct habits that have been major contributors to these diseases, which we need to stop in order to get a hold on our hormones.

Coffee

Coffee artificially stimulates the adrenal glands and creates a state of alertness (and even panic) that eventually results in their overuse and depletes their reserves completely. At this point, hormonal balance is impossible and chronic fatigue sets in, which sets up the dangerous cycle of craving more caffeine, and further depleting your precious adrenals.

Prescriptions and medications

Prescription medications have become a staple in many people's day-to-day activities, so much so, that it is estimated that 7 out of 10 people are on at least one prescription medication.

Pain relievers, heart medications, anti-anxiety drugs, sleeping pills, birth control pills, and nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen all contribute to hormonal imbalances.

Malnutrition

Although society could be dubbed the most obese it has ever been, there is a serious problem with malnutrition. People have chosen highly refined, high sugar, high trans fat, GMO ridden, preservative laden, and chemically treated foods over fresh, local, clean, and nutritious whole foods. These choices have had a detrimental effect on our digestive systems, which in turn has a direct negative effect on our hormones.

Xenoestrogens

Xenoestrogens, or manmade estrogen, mimicking molecules, are a very common toxin found intertwined in day-to-day life. The most common places they can be found include plastic containers, lining of canned food, Styrofoam cups and containers, cosmetics and toiletries, and agricultural chemicals. These hormone disruptors can cause all kinds of hormone related issues including poor sleep, energy, concentration, and libido, as well as hormonal related cancers, such as breast, ovary, and prostate cancer.

Improper sleep patterns

Shift work, staying up late, and getting up in the middle of the night have disrupted the delicate circadian rhythm that governs our wake-sleep cycle. This has messed up people's melatonin and cortisol levels, often leading to high cortisol levels and low melatonin levels near bedtime, which is a perfect recipe for improper sleep and imbalanced hormones.

Stress

Stress levels seem to be higher than they have ever been, and the resulting effect on hormones has been devastating. In fact, chronic stress among individuals in their prime results in the same blood hormone levels as a 70 year old. This chronic stress also depletes adrenal energy, which is a sure fire way to create hormonal problems.

Electronics use

The obsession with smart phones, laptops, desk top computers, home theatre systems, and all things electronic has made our lives easier in some ways, but much more complicated in others.

This excessive uptake of EMF's has created poor sleep, anxiety and stress, decreased energy levels, gastrointestinal issues, thyroid disorders, and inflammation, all which contribute to hormonal imbalance.

Sunscreen and sunglasses

Less time spent outdoors and excessive sunscreen and sunglasses use are a major reason for hormone imbalance. Without vitamin D (a neuroregulatory hormone) being properly absorbed by the skin and the back of the lens of the eye, our uptake of this important hormone is rapidly diminished and will cause all kinds of hormonal problems.

Balancing your hormones can be a complicated and arduous affair, depending how depleted your adrenal and thyroid function has become, and your commitment to change the lifestyle habits noted above. However, an excellent step you can take each day to begin to restore that balance is the Happy Hormone Smoothie, noted in the first source below. Candida overgrowth is a very common cause of hormone disruption, so check out How to Kill Candida.
