Preppers going 'low-tech' to prepare for EMP attack
by J. D. Heyes
(NaturalNews) Regular readers of Natural News have known for some time that there are concerns rising in some sectors of government and society about a potential EMP -- electromagnetic pulse -- incident, either man-made or naturally occurring, that could threaten to wipe out most of our electric grid and turn much of the world into a post-modern version of the Dark Ages.
Just a few days ago, in fact, our founder and editor-in-chief, Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, reported on a little-covered incident which happened in 2012, and which NASA only recently revealed: Each decade, there is roughly a 12 percent chance of a near-wipeout of humanity's high-tech civilization. In fact, one such event nearly wiped out technology across the planet during the summer of 2012.
"A powerful coronal mass ejection (CME) tore through Earth orbit on July 23, 2012," reports NASA.gov. "If the eruption had occurred only one week earlier, Earth would have been in the line of fire."
Most don't have the room or the money to store that much fuel
In addition, NASA reported:
Analysts believe that a direct hit by an extreme CME such as the one that missed Earth in July 2012 could cause widespread power blackouts, disabling everything that plugs into a wall socket. Most people wouldn't even be able to flush their toilet because urban water supplies largely rely on electric pumps.
And remember, there is a 12 percent chance that could happen every 10 years, making the need to find a way to survive such an incident (or a similar power-grid failure caused by the EMP from a nuclear explosion) all the more important. In fact, some say going low-tech is the way to survive a high-tech catastrophe.
Daisy Luther, writing at The Organic Prepper blog, noted:
We've all read many articles about the likelihood of grid failure. We've been warned again and again that it isn't a matter of if, but when, it happens.
Because of this, a lot of people are preparing for a very different future. Folks are getting ready for the Big Blackout. The thing is, I am not sure everyone is thinking this through. Many people are spending buckets of money on preparations to try to keep their lives as similar as possible to how they are today. They're investing in diesel generators and Faraday cages to protect their electronics. They are buying propane-fueled appliances. They're stashing away fuel to run these gadgets.
The problem, Luther stated, is that this solution will only work so long as there is fuel to run the machines. What about when that fuel runs out, as it inevitably will?
Start planning now
The fact is, Luther and others have noted, it will take years to recreate the society that will be lost from an EMP disaster. Electric power grids, computer chips and consoles and other technology simply don't regenerate on their own, and there are few people who have the money, space and resources to store years' worth of generator fuel (and that's assuming they can guard it).
It is better, then, to focus on low-tech solutions to living a daily life.
"If money is an object in your preparedness endeavors, (and let's face it, money is an object for most of us these days), then focus your dollars on preps that are sustainable without electrical power," wrote Luther. "Instead of trying to live the exact same life you are living right now, only fueled by an individual generator, look for low-tech solutions instead."
No matter how you wind up getting "power" -- if you even can or do -- the basics of life will remain the same: food, water, shelter, clothing, sanitation and hygiene, light, warmth in the winter, etc.
